Lions in and around camp! 27th June 2011
For the past three days Dunia Camp experienced heavy rains during the evenings. Since then we had a “huge” herd of buffalo, maybe thousands of them, at the front face of Dunia Camp.
A group of elephants has been visiting the camp for almost a week which means guests have had to be escorted by vehicle in most cases. A lot of acacia tree surrounding the camp have been broken down by these elephants. Currently, big herds of migration are on western corridor heading to the northern circuit!
Game drive is more exciting, seronera has become the country side of leopards and hundreds of lions with cubs. This has not been to lucky for the gazelles as they have killed on average about 3 to 5 each day.
Yesterday (black rhino) Mama Serengeti was spotted around the Moru Kopjes with a very young baby roughly two months old which we are naming baby “Patena”.
Lions have been roaming around the camp every day which has been another exiting experience. Askari spotted a lion patrolling within the camp two days ago – we could see the paw prints in the mud the next morning.
FANTASTIC game viewing - 13 June 2011
This week has been another good week at Dunia Camp as it rained a little bit which made the huge community of animals come close to camp to share the camp fire with our happy clients.
The game viewing has been wonderful - we saw a leopard almost every day just three hundred meters from the camp and the most amazing behaviour of the leopard killing for fun. Within a week there was about ten gazelle hanging in different trees.
The big herds of elephants crossed the camp from south to the north. The Moru lion pride have two different aged cubs – 13 in total. Some are about 2 weeks old, while are almost 2 months old. The pride is getting much bigger since camp closed for the end of season at the end of March.
Big herds of wildebeests are still on the western corridor and small groups are still hanging around in different area in central of Serengeti especially in the Moru area.
The highlight of the week was that almost all our guests got to see a black rhino in the Moru Kopjes. On Sunday the ‘Fisher party’ managed to see a whole pride of lions killing a buffalo which is a very rare sighting. Last night lions was roaming within the camp. Our guests were very happy as everyone thought the lions were close to their tents – they said that Dunia Camp was the place to be and that they would be back for another visit!
It's true, Tanzania is a place of great marvels – Serengeti, Ngorongoro, Kilimanjaro, Zanzibar… But that's not all. It also has great herds of elephants in Ruaha, tree-climbing lions around Lake Manyara, chimpanzee sanctuaries in Gombe and Mahale and packs of wild dogs in Selous.
There are also sunsets on the Rufiji River, when the water boils with hippos and crocodiles. In fact, the country has the whole panoply of east Africa's wildlife – including such rarities as the red colobus monkey, black rhino, hawksbill and leatherback turtles and Pemba flying foxes – concentrated in an unrivalled collection of parks and reserves.
So you think you've seen it all? We're betting Tanzania still has a surprise or two for you.
This week in Dunia Camp there were almost all animals to see and the guests were impressed. There was a lot of game around the camp drinking water and Zebras having breakfast with the guests.
Sightings in the Camp:
- Bat eared Foxes, Hyenas, Vultures, Jackals, Zebra, Lion
- Pride of Lion
- Thousands of Zebra and Wildebeest
- Elephants and Hippos
- Hyenas and Foxes and Jackals
- Impalas, Gazelles
- Cheetah and Leopard Kill
- Lots Of Buffalo
We had another great week with good sightings in Central Serengeti. There was no rain for the past two weeks, but Wildebeests have been all over the area of Moru Land . It is a once in a lifetime experience to see so many Wildebeests and zebras, groups of elephants and topis within the camp at night. This was really amazing to all guests in the camp - from midnight till the morning, from north to south - the Moru plain land was full of Wildebeests!
The Saad family experienced an interesting night with a lot of Wildebeests surrounding the camp. On their game drive they managed to spot a Rhino near the moru kopjes, a pride of Lions and a Leopard sleeping in the tree.
The Huntingford group saw a very exciting sighting of a Leopard hunting and finally killing a Gazelle. This week again has been so good for spotting Lions, as twelve of them were spotted near the Simba Rocks. A family of Cheetah were spotted yesterday in Central Seronera.
The Murdoch family spotted ten Lions, two males on the rocks and eight Lions resting on the branch of a dead tree in the moru kopjes. Spotted Hyena were seen chasing vultures to get some food.
We hope to have another interesting week!
It has been a good week in Central Serengeti, especially in the Moru area. With a little bit of rain - especially in the evening, the majority of our guests enjoyed to be in one of the most beautiful and exclusive areas. The guests enjoyed the morning game drive around 6.15 AM with a beautiful and quick sun rise over the Magadi Lake! Wildebeests have been in the whole area moving to the South and coming back to Moru Kopjes area in the evening.
Most of the times there have been lots of different animals in the camp – like Topis, Zebras, Gazelles, Warthogs, Elephants and of course lots of Wildebeest. A lot of Elephants with babies have been visiting the camp – mostly at night. Another good experience for the guests was Lions roaring and Hyenas laughing in the middle of the night.
After dinner one of our guests wanted to go to sleep when he noticed a scratching on his tent and saw a big dark shadow moving. He looked out of his tent and realized that it was a huge elephant that was grazing peacefully right behind his tent.
Guests on the Fam Trip stayed one night and spotted a Leopard, Cheetahs, Lions with cubs and an injured Zebra that was bitten by a puff adder on his leg. One family staying at Dunia spotted five Cheetahs at once near Seronera Plain on the short grass area right at their arrival in the camp. Another family spotted a group of sixteen Lions yesterday evening, amazing!
We hope to have another exciting week!
