Matemwe Retreat History

Matemwe Retreat opened its doors for the first time in 2008 after it became apparent that there was a demand for private, luxury accommodation in the area.

The villas were constructed by local craftsmen using local materials wherever possible: walls were made of local stone and the roof of Makuti thatch. Most of the furniture was made from locally produced coconut wood, while soft furnishings were produced by Zanzibari women.

"Matemwe is a place for those who are content to do very little... we felt deliciously indulged..."
