Matemwe Lodge Sustainability Actions
We foster ethics in line with Eco Policies of high standard, Fair Trade of all local procurement (foodstuff, furniture, fittings, building material, guest effects, curios, etc.), Waste Management (collect, separate, cover, contain and control), Energy saving practices, avoiding any possible Pollution, Safety & Welfare for our staff & guests, as well as Reduction of our carbon footprint. The implementation of these projects will boost our positive impacts in this environment tremendously.
Furthermore, we are at this point in time investing 105,000.00US$ into a sewage treatment plant (including the necessary new waste water network), as well as a water treatment plant (filtration of water) to reuse all our water of the property. A rubbish separation set-up will be constructed during the coming weeks. In addition, huge efforts from our side result in better waste management; this includes the villages surrounding our property. We are working closely with a foundation (The Honeyguide Foundation: www.honeyguide.org) and the Tourism Investors Association (ZATI) to speed up environmental friendly procedures & structures. We are also tapping into know how & findings originating from researches conducted by a team from the University of Turku, Department of Geography of Finland.
Malaria, the biggest killer in the world and its carrier, the mosquito regularly visit the nearby village. HGF have a plan: the mosquito net is going to be introduced to every household near Matemwe. We will work together with all the hotels and lodges and provide a means for any guest staying in the lodge to donate a mosquito net to a family.
Besides buying the catch of the day from the local fishermen, the lodge has helped the village to get electricity and clean drinking water. Since September 2002, Matemwe and its guests support the school in Kigomani, the neighbouring village. We also assists in financing classrooms for the village school and sponsors promising students for further education. Matemwe has pledged to donate to our village every year. Also many guests have donated books and equipment which we give to the school at the beginning of every new term.
