ABOUT OLIVERS > OLIVER'S CAMP REVIEWS
Ken and Michele look after this camp in a very professional and caring way. The food was excellent and the liquid flowed!! We had our own driver for the day time treks, but used the camp tracker and warden for our quite exceptional night drive. See title of this review!! The tents were very spacious and comfortable. Obviously had guards escorting us to the mess tent and back.
Nothing was too much trouble for any of the staff. If you get a chance, look at Ken's photography. The book is on the table in the mess tent. I think he's a Photographer of the Year. I was really impressed with Michelle and Ken. They were great fun to talk to about their take on Africa, especially Tarangire National Park. I would definitely recommend this camp to anyone with a sense of adventure.

Every aspect of this two night stay was so perfect. We had interesting and thoughtful hosts, Onar and Simon, and the staff were all excellent. The sundowners at the campfire, the lovely tent rooms, the fabulous showers, wonderful food and drinks outside in the bush at lunch and inside the dining tent in the morning and evenings.
Totally the highlight of the overnight stays of our safari. I am not a big fan of expensive hotels with all the frills I never use or need, as on business trips we have stayed in hundreds and most are pretty much all the same. This camp was money well spent and I am so glad the travel agent said this camp is a must. Go...you will love it.

This was our first tented housing experience and it was spectacular. Oliver's is located inside the Tarangire National Park so everyone is on a Safari. We would highly recommend Oliver's to everyone even those who feel they need luxury housing. Spend the extra money to stay at permanent tented camps to really feel you are in Africa. Oliver's offers a walking Safari which we would love to have done. Great food wonderful people.

I stayed at Oliver's camp for three nights during a two week safari. The camp moved recently to this new location in the deep south of Tarangire NP. It is away from all the crowds in a good location with a nice view and the added benefit that walking safaris are allowed. Since you're pretty much constrained to the safari vehicle the rest of the time, I enjoyed the walk along Tarangire river a lot. The camp is pretty close to Silale Swamp, maybe the most spectacular part of Tarangire, and we had a herd of elephants visiting the camp a couple of times and nightly entertainment was provided by a pair of jackals and the occasional leopard roar.
The camp is small with large tents which feature a king size bed, an additional twin size bed, an en suite bathroom with a flush toilet and a shower with 24h hot water. The common areas are very spacious and look beautiful. Food was delicious and everybody enjoyed the nightly campfire chats and drinks.
Camp staff was excellent and made me feel right at home, just like at the other two Asilia camps I visited on the trip, Dunia and Olakira.
If you're looking for a remote wilderness experience in Tarangire with the comfort of a permanent tented camp, Oliver's is as good as it gets.

We liked this camp as it was small and intimate, gathering round the fire for sundowners and eating all together. The tents were very comfortable and the hot water system excellent, which I understand is new. The game drives were very good and we saw most game, including the big cats. Elephants were many, they liked coming near the tent at night which was exciting. The walking safari for two hours was very educational. Very friendly staff. Certainly would recommend this camp.

When I first dreamed of a luxurious camp in Africa, this is exactly what I pictured. The “tents” have 5-star amenities, which I found incredible given that the location is so deep within Tarangire National Park. (Don't be fooled by the 2-star TripAdvsor rating!) I really enjoyed taking hot showers after game drives, as your view while bathing is the park itself. You are living about as close as you can get to nature, without sacrifcing a sense of luxury. I also enjoyed the intimate atmosphere of this camp - you get to know the other guests at happy hour and dinner, as it’s very small relative to the other camps and lodges throughout Tanzania. Waking up to hot tea and coffee brought to the ten each morning and going to bed after cocktails around a campfire - excellent touches!

This was my favorite place during our trip to East Africa. The camp is very luxurious, but it is not excessive. There is a simplicity to the place that lets you feel like you are really on safari. The camp is pretty small and the tents are well spaced out. And the Southern part of Tarangire park - where the camp is situated - is quiet and beautiful.

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Oliver's Camp and very highly recommend it. It is a lovely, upscale, an "Out of Africa" oasis of comfort and relaxation, and is a wonderful place to come back to after a long day out on safari. Our tent (#5) was luxuriously furnished with rustic furniture and had a separate dressing area separated by a screen, as well as a large airy bathroom with flush toilet, rainfall shower with great water pressure, and a lovely vanity with a large mirror. It also came with very polite frogs, who always appeared when I took a shower! Water was hot and plentiful, and our bed was the most comfortable of our trip to Kenya, Rwanda, and Tanzania.
The common area is a great place to hang out in. It's furnished with rugs, plush leather seating, old world-style wooden tables and armoirs, and has an open bar and lovely dining area. Just below it sits the firepit "bush TV" area where camp visitors gather in the evening to have a drink before dinner each evening, as well as a private dining area for romantic dinners.
The overall setting is very romantic, especially in the evenings when the lanterns are lit. Everything sits on a low bluff overlooking a valley below. The sand paths are raked every day, and in the morning, it's possible to see the tracks of the hyenas and other animals that you heard calling outside your tent the night before.
Food is very good, especially considering you're eating so far from "civilization."
Staff is friendly and accommodating. Of note is the quality of their walking guides. We met two guides, who were also responsible for meeting and greeting and having meals with guests. These guys really know their stuff. I was impressed with their knowledge of flora and fauna.
Do go on a bush walk while you're here, as that is their specialty. We really enjoyed ours, although we weren't able to get as close to the elephants as is depicted in one of the photos on their website. But, I'm not sure I'd want to get that close, knowing how aggressive the elephants at Tarangire are! We were challenged several times while in our safari vehicle, so staying at a safe distance while on foot was a good call by our guide.
I wouldn't hesitate to stay here again. It's lovely.

We arrived at Oliver’s around 5:00, showered and went off to watch Bush TV for sundowners. The camp seats its guests together at the dinner table. We had a great meal talking with the only other guests, a couple of ladies originally from Uganda, Alex, Oliver’s walking guide, and Richard, the camp manager. The next night there were no other guests and we had the camp to ourselves and we dined with our guide. Great food and wine at the camp! Oliver’s has very nice tents, too.
The game viewing in Tarangire focused on elephants. We saw maybe 600 on one drive. Seeing lions mate was also a highlight and there were a lot of birds. The landscape was dramatic and the baobab trees were really cool.
The only downside was the number of tse tse flies in parts of the park. They are pure evil and tormented us during our game drives. In some places the clusters were so thick, we would crack the window just long enough to snap a couple of pictures and then close it fast.

Simon (Camp Manager) and all the staff were great! The camp has very nice tents with beautiful views out the front looking over the savannah. We even had lounge chairs in front of our tent on the patio to enjoy the view. While the tents don't have running water, the camp guys will bring you hot water in the morning and afternoon on your request. The food was outstanding with lots of fresh fruit, great meat dishes & vegetables. Plenty of beer and wine available & we had happy hour each night before dinner by the campfire (“bush TV”). One of the girls in our party was celebrating her 50th birthday, and the camp went out of their way to help her celebrate. They made a “surprise” cake and delivered it to her with all the camp staff coming out to sing to her - our entire group ended up in an African line dance singing along with what I think was the Tanzanian national anthem!

We went to Oliver’s Camp as the first stop of out 2 weeks safari last August. We had read all the great reviews and were excited to experience it for ourselves, but nothing could of prepared us for this place.
Set in beautiful surroundings, miles away from anywhere, the camp was a welcome site at the end of a long day of travelling and game drives. We were met by a really warm welcome from all the staff before being taken to our tent. I say tent but that is a bit of an understatement. It was beautifully decorated and really comfortable. My wife did have a little difficulty sleeping though- not because the room was uncomfortable- just because of the lions that insisted on walking around our tent!!!
The food was also excellent and way above what you might expect in such an isolated place.
All in all I would recommend this lodge to anyone who wants a true luxury safari experience- you won’t regret it. As for us, we will be back there as soon as we get a chance. Thanks Oliver’s camp!

In looking at other reviews for Oliver's Camp, it's important to know what you value and what the lodging has to offer. Yes, it is a semi-permanent tented camp in Tarangire NP and has chemical toilets and bucket showers in an open air bathroom attached to your tent. The bathroom was clean. The tents are spacious and we thought romantic. Morning tea and coffee are delivered at a time of your choosing (seems to be standard on safari) and at that time they will fill your wash bucket with hot water. Don't take a shower in the morning; wait until afternoon break when the sun is out and the air is warmer. They will fill your bucket shower at any time you wish with hot water. The Asilia guides (Martin, Alex and Alex) were fantastic. It is nice to already be in the park. Another reviewer said you had to drive out a bit every day. We agree, you do drive out a bit to get to other locations of the park, but really the wildlife is all around you (even sometimes next to your tent).
We also happened to really like the food, which was buffet style (eat as much as you like) and communal seating which we also really enjoyed and think other camps should do the same. In particular as a home cook, I was impressed what they did out in the bush with the food. Fly camping was also fantastic. The lounge appeared "Out of Africa." Staff was always very friendly and accommodating.
We assigned value three stars because while Oliver's is exceptional, we paid for exceptional.
This is NOT Sayari in the Serengeti. Sayari is now a permanent camp and has a totally different feel. We actually preferred the more rustic and private feel of Oliver's camp.
We recommend it highly.

Without a doubt, with KIRAWIRA tented camp, this was the highlight of our recent trip to Tanzania. Oliver’s is the real Africa experience - you go to sleep after port and cheese in the dining tent, accompanied by the scamper of dik diks around your tent and are awakened by the majesty of a competitive pride of lions on the surrounding plain at Tarangire. Alex is the perfect host and impressionist if you are lucky enough to have an entertainer at dinner. The food service and staff were all superb, complemented by great company of fellow guests. Make no mistake Oliver’s with its bucket showers and REAL African experience, will remain in your memory long after you've forgotten the many five star experiences you may have had in your lifetime in terms of perfection we can only compare it to its opposite La Posta Vecchia Ladispoli Lazio Italy in terms of absolute perfection. Just can’t wait to go back!
