Where to see The Great Migration

The Great Wildebeest Migration is an annual event which covers a circular route of over 1 000 km. This journey stretches all the way from the northernmost reaches of the Masai Mara in Kenya, down towards the south of the Serengeti as far as the border to the Ngorongoro Conservation Area (but not so far as the Crater itself).

So the question of: “Where can I see the migration?” has quite a simple answer – you can see it anywhere! Thewhere is dictated strongly by thewhen, and vice versa.

To make it easier, we have combined certain months of the year to highlight the main areas where the herds can be seen.

When? December through to March

Where do I need to be? Eastern & Southern Serengeti

In the East, the best camp to visit would be Namiri Plains, which is right in the heart of the action! When the rains make their appearance, the scenery in the area is transformed and the fresh, green grasses attract hundreds of thousands of wildebeest stretching as far as the eye can see with tonnes of predators keeping an eye on them too…

In the South, it’s advisable tovisit one of our three mobile migration camps; Olakira Camp, Kimondo Camp, or Ubuntu Camp. All three are perfectly positioned to be in the best spot to see the herds so you are pretty much guaranteed a front-row seat to all of the action!

The south is also where the herds begin calving; you can read more on this largelyunknown but extremely exciting time here.

When? April through to Mid. June

Where do I need to be? Central & Western Serengeti

The herds pass through thecentral region of the Serengeti twice a year. Once, during May & June, and then again in November/December astheymake their way south again. Dunia Camp is positioned in the heart of the Serengeti and offersthe perfect opportunity to catch the herds during thistime of year.

The “Western Corridor” is an area know for its lush grasslands that reaches all the way to Lake Victoria. Ubuntu Camp is ideallylocated to catch the slowly grazing wildebeest and their newborns as they make their way northwards towards the Masai Mara.

When? Mid. June through to November

Where do I need to be? Northern Serengeti & Masai Mara

The Northern Serengeti plays host to one of the most exciting and dramaticspectacles on Earth – the epic river crossings! From July to November the herds make their way towards to bank of the Mara River and brave the crocodile infested waters and hungry predators waiting on the other side in order to make it into the Masai Mara. We have four camps that would provide you with the ultimate experience and get you as close to the action as possible:Sayari Camp, Olakira Camp, Ubuntu Camp, and Kimondo Camp.

FromJune through to November each year, the Masai Mara becomes a hive of action and is visited by thethousands of wildebeest! The herds will spend some time in the Mara grazing and then make their way back down into the Serengeti, once again braving the deadly waters of the Mara River. We have a number of camps in the Masai Mara that you should definitely stay at during this time; Rekero Camp, Naboisho Camp, Encounter Mara, and Topi House (Mara Bush Houses).
