About This Asilia Adventure:
One of Kenya’s best-kept secrets, the two log cabins at Rutundu on the lower slopes of Mount Kenya offer a remote wilderness retreat. Guests spend their days soaking up the spectacular mountain views, watching for birdlife and fauna with a pair of binoculars from the cabin porch, and enjoying rewarding hikes and excellent fishing.
There is no phone signal at the cabins or Wi-Fi, so you can truly escape civilisation for a few days. For couples and honeymooners, this is the ultimate romantic escape. The cabins are not the easiest to access (something that many of the most beautiful spots in the world have in common) and are self-catering so are rarely included in a typical safari itinerary to Kenya as a result. We’ve taken the hard work off your hands, providing delicious food supplies for the Rutundu cook to rustle up into delicious meals for you, wood for the fire, and will arrange everything from start to finish to ensure a magical stay.
What Is Included In This Adventure?
Transfers Nanyuki – Rutundu Cabins return*, all meals from dinner on Day 1 to breakfast on Day 3, house drinks (limited soft drinks, local beers, and house wines), permits and park fees, one day’s fishing permit per person (additional days can be added if you wish), Asilia conservation charge and Medevac cover.
*Alternatively, it is possible to enjoy a helicopter flight transfer to (or from) the cabins (weather-dependent), at additional cost. Please enquire with your booking agent for details and costs.
Snapshot of this Asilia Adventure
Depart Nanyuki by road in a 4×4 vehicle, driving approximately 4 hrs to reach the Rutundu Cabins. Most of the journey is on a dirt road up the mountain, so expect some bumps along the way, particularly on the second half of the journey.
The road ends at the Kizito Gorge where the team will meet you and carry the supplies and your luggage up. You’ll enjoy a 15-minute escorted walk to the cabins. Settle into your log cabin home, which we will stock fully with food and drinks. The staff will orientate you about the cabin, walking trails and lakes, and then leave you to explore your corner of Mt Kenya at your own pace. There are guided or unguided walking trails to suit most levels of fitness, from short walks to more strenuous hikes up to Lake Alice.
Overnight: Rutundu Log Cabin
A full day to explore from the Rutundu Cabins. As well as the numerous hikes and walks available, there is excellent fishing available at various spots nearby: Lake Rutundu, near the cabins, has three casting platforms as well as a rowing boat, Lake Alice, or in the Kizito River Gorge. The rainbow trout in the lakes range from 2 – 6lbs. Fishing equipment is provided, but serious fishing enthusiasts may prefer to bring their own equipment. The birdlife on the mountain is delightful, with frequent sightings of the scarlet-tufted malachite sunbirds and alpine chats often at breakfast time.
Overnight: Rutundu Log Cabin
After breakfast, you will be collected and driven to Nanyuki where you can catch a light aircraft flight onward to another safari destination or back to Nairobi.
Good to know
The two Rutundu cabins are usually self-catering, but we will provide all of the food and drink you’ll need. In addition, there are staff who will cook for you. The cabins are simple and rustic but very comfortable, each with a main bedroom, small twin/bunk bedroom and bathroom. There is no electricity, lights are in the form of solar lamps, and a fireplace keeps the cabins cosy in the cooler months.
The staff are available if you need anything but typically leave you to enjoy this remote mountain location fully with minimal interruption. Due to the mountainous location, the weather can be unpredictable, so we recommend packing for all conditions – sun, rain, hail, and anything in between!
