About This Asilia Adventure:
Break up your Northern Tanzania safari by spending a few days journeying from A to B on foot, rather than by vehicle. You’ll see parts of the country, landscapes and people that other travellers never do, slowing down and really immersing yourself in this vibrant Maasai landscape. There are no roads where you are travelling, and you will have the chance to spend some time visiting one of the small Maasai villages which other safari-goers cannot reach. This genuine experience is increasingly hard to find in this region of Tanzania where so many cultural villages are highly commercialised. The walk will take several days, passing around the lush forested slopes of the Olmoti Crater and the northern side of the Ngorongoro Crater, reaching the Seneto road that descends towards the Serengeti. Due to the timings of this adventure, we recommend spending a couple of nights in the area beforehand, to allow you to game drive in the Ngorongoro Crater and enjoy any other activities, so you can simply continue onward to the Serengeti on Day 4.
What Is Included In This Adventure?
All meals from lunch on Day 1 to lunch on Day 4, all house drinks (soft drinks and selected alcohol) throughout, transfer from Manyara Airstrip to The Highlands at the start of the itinerary, park fees and camping fees, expert walking guide (with rifle) throughout, back-up four-wheel-drive safari vehicle, all logistics for fly camp set up, Asilia conservation charge, and Medevac cover.
Snapshot of this Asilia Adventure
Arrive at The Highlands today (or earlier if you wish to visit the Ngorongoro Crater or enjoy other activities in the region), located on the side of the Olmoti Crater in the Ngorongoro Highlands. Enjoy an afternoon relaxing and enjoying views over the rolling Maasai land from the balcony of your unique geodesic dome tent. Your Wayo walking safari guide will meet you this evening to discuss the next days of walking and enjoy a delicious dinner and a good night’s sleep before your adventure begins tomorrow.
Overnight: The Highlands (GP basis)
Wake before sunrise for an early breakfast and set off on foot around one of the cattle trails that leads around the edge of the Olmoti Crater. It is possible to drive a short section of this, if you would prefer a less strenuous day (please advise at point of booking, for planning purposes). Once you have rounded the crater, you will walk through the rolling grassy plains which are broken up by small Maasai villages and herdsmen with their iconic red shukas wrapped around their shoulders to keep away the cold in the early mornings. You will reach your fly camp in the mid-afternoon, located in the acacia Lahai Forest near the Ngorongoro Crater.
Overnight: Wayo walking fly camp
An early start today, setting off after breakfast at sunrise, continuing your walk around the rim of the Ngorongoro Crater, taking in some spectacular and unspoilt views of this iconic dormant volcano. The early mornings here are particularly special, watching as the mist burns away and the warmth of the sun arrives – we recommend keeping your camera handy today! The terrain varies as you walk, from acacia woodland to highland montane forest. You will walk through a traditional Maasai village, stopping with your guide to meet some of the local people and learning a little about Maasai life and culture, before you continue your walk. Camp in a new spot in the acacia forest, enjoying a well-earned siesta in the afternoon when you arrive, and dinner cooked over the campfire.
Overnight: Wayo walking fly camp
Another spectacular day, walking on and sometimes inside the rim of the Ngorongoro Crater this morning. You will notice the terrain becoming drier as you move into the rain shadow of the crater, all while enjoying incredible and uninterrupted views of the Crater floor. The walk will finish at around midday at the Seneto descent road on the western side of the Ngorongoro Crater, where the adventure concludes, and you will bid your walking guide farewell. Here, an Asilia driver-guide and 4×4 safari vehicle will await with a picnic lunch to continue your journey into the Serengeti. The driver-guide for today and onward travel arrangements are not included in the adventure price.
Overnight: Not included – to be booked as an add-on depending on your safari itinerary.
Good To Know
Fly Camp Accommodation Facilities
Lightweight nylon mountain tents with mattresses on the floor, pillows, bed linens or good quality sleeping bags if cold. Outdoor long-drop toilet a few metres from sleeping tent. Dining is mostly outdoors when the weather permits, but there is a mess tent when shelter or shade is needed. Bucket showers are also available to freshen up in. Due to the altitude around the Ngorongoro region, the nights can be cold, so we recommend bringing some warm clothes, thick socks and a woolly hat.
