BBC One’s latest mini-series, Serengeti, aired its first episode earlier this month. Each episode follows the lives and intertwined stories of several animals that call these plains home while showcasing the intense drama and action that accompanies the area’s distinctive wildlife.

In the latest episode, the characters we have come to know are eagerly awaiting the annual Great Migration herds, desperate for the additional food source that will be made available to them. Tembo, a young elephant, is faced with a difficult decision when his mother, the matriarch of the herd, gives birth to a new calf and he is sidelined. Emotions run high as Tembo struggles to cope when his entire world is turned upside down.

We’ve rounded up some of our favorite facts about the elephant to share with you and will be sharing more about the other characters in BBC One’s Serengeti series in the coming weeks as the episodes are premiered.
