BBC One’s latest mini-series, Serengeti, aired its first episode last week. Each episode follows the lives and intertwined stories of several animals that call these plains home while showcasing the intense drama and action that accompanies the area’s distinctive wildlife.

In last week’s episode, we were introduced to Zalika, a young female hyena whose entire world changes following an unfortunate event. In a terrifying attack by young male lions, Zalika loses her mother and ultimately has to assume the leadership of her family. Life for hyena clans is not easy – they face many turbulent circumstances and have some unusual ways of doing things!

We’ve rounded up some of our favorite facts about the hyena to share with you and will be sharing more about the other characters in BBC One’s Serengeti series in the coming weeks as the episodes are premiered.
