BBC One’s latest mini-series, Serengeti, aired its first episode last month. Each episode follows the lives and intertwined stories of several animals that call these plains home while showcasing the intense drama and action that accompanies the area’s distinctive wildlife.

The dry season is upon the animals of the Serengeti, it is the toughest of times for some but also a time of plenty for others. Earlier in the series, we were introduced toShani, the zebra mother. Shani is tasked with the duty of leading her family with the great migration. She is forced to stop temporarily to give birth to her foal, but as soon as he can run, they are off again heading towards the great river. In this week’s episode Shani and her foalhave no choice but to cross the river, even though there are crocodiles lying in wait and the currents are treacherous.

We’ve rounded up some of our favorite facts about the zebra to share with you and will be sharing more about the other characters in BBC One’s Serengeti series in the coming weeks as the episodes are premiered.
