East Africa is full of surprises. You might think it’s just about safaris and wildlife, but Kenya and Tanzania coastlines offer blissful beach escapes. Whether it’s a wild coastal adventure you are seeking, a family holiday or romantic getaway, we have a few beach destinations that are an absolute must visit!

Zanzibar, Tanzania

Zanzibaris the main island in the Tanzanian archipelago of Zanzibar and is one of the best-known islands in Africa.

Pemba Island

Situated north-east of Zanzibar, Pemba is one of the lesser-known islands, home to small fishing villages, historic ruins and unspoiled and picturesque coastline. With water temperatures between 77°F and 84°F (25 – 28°C) and incredible visibility between 66 and 131 feet (20 – 40 meters), it’s clear why Pemba is ranked amongst some of the best dive sites in the world.

Other activities include day excursions to mangrove forests where you can enjoy a variety of water sports, sunset cruises on a dhow, a traditional kayak, or rejuvenating spa treatments, the island is an excellent choice for a private and exclusive romantic break.

Matemwe

A fusion of tropical paradise and historical charm, Matemwe is the largest island in the Zanzibar Archipelago and this island getaway is a perfect escape for families or groups looking for a private slice of Zanzibar’s stunning coastline. Kenya

There is a lot more to Kenya than just hooves, claws and the rolling plains of the Masai Mara. Kenya’s coastline stretches over 333 miles (536 kilometres) and offers postcard-perfect sandy white beaches. Malindi

Malindi is located 75 miles (120 kilometres) from Mombasa. Getting to Malindi is possible via road and air. This town is known for its laid-back atmosphere, sunny weather, fresh seafood, Swahili-inspired architecture and of course pristine beaches.

Although Malindi is much smaller in comparison to Mombasa and Nairobi it offers some of the most luxurious hotels, resorts and restaurants. The town is rich in history and culture and has some of the best places to visit, such as Milda Creek in Watamu. Milda Creek is a broadwater tidal stream surrounded by mangroves and lined with palms. For a tranquil experience cruise through the creek at sunset, sipping sundowners or for those who are a little bit more adventurous, opt for stand-up paddling (SUP). The central broadwater is perfect for wakeboarding and skiing.

Diani

Voted the best beach in Africa, this uncrowded and vibrant piece of coast includes Tiwi and Galu Beach, Chale Island, Msambweni, Funzi Island, and Kinondo.

The island is framed by coconut palms, the beach is protected by a coral reef, creating amazing conditions for snorkelling and swimming.
