Matemwe : Adventure vs Relaxation

By Asilia Africa | 01 March 2021

When planning a seaside getaway – most people are happy to just spend the day on the beach, catching a tan and keeping cool by the pool. However, there are those who look for an adventure-filled beach vacation – or those who like a nice combination of the two! Let us show you how to experience Zanzibar in the most action-packed, and relaxing, way possible.

Matemwe Beach is a peaceful spot on the lush tropical island of Zanzibar. With a shallow, coral-fringed lagoon, it is the perfect place for a tropical beach holiday, the ideal place to relax and unwind after a busy game-viewing safari. Just off the coast is the world-famous Mnemba Atoll, said to provide some of the best diving and snorkelling on the continent. The waters off these mesmerizing coral reefs provide brilliant sightings of colorful reef fish, turtles, and a variety of dolphin species, while the deeper Indian Ocean gives you the chance to see humpback whales on their annual migration route between July and November.

Matemwe offers all sorts of activities. Whether you want to relax in a hammock in the shade of the palm trees or explore the history and culture of Zanzibar, there is no shortage of things to do while you’re at Matemwe.

Wander the Streets of Stone Town: Architecture and History

If beautiful architecture and history interest you, then you have to spend a day wandering the magical streets of Stone Town, gazing at the intricately carved doors, and elaborate mosques. Stone Town is a World Heritage Site and peppered with historical sites, echoing a rich past reflecting varied cultural influences.

The most beautiful architecture can be found in Stone Town.

Fish and Spice Markets

If you’re a foodie and you’re itching to cook something up, then head on over to the Spice Market. Zanzibar is known as the Spice Island, and for good reason! You’ll find the most aromatic spices in the market, and to top it off, we’ll help you cook a meal back at the lodge using the spices you have hand-picked.

Head back with a freshly caught fish and some spices, we’ll show you how to use them in a cooking class.

Alternatively, you can visit a spice plantation and learn about the tropical fruits and spices that are grown on the land and bestow Zanzibar with their goodness.

Sea-based Activities: Diving or Snorkelling

The Indian Ocean is renowned for its diving – and no spot is more famous than Mnemba Atoll.Diving or snorkelling among dolphins, turtles and reef fish is a magical experience.

Scenic kayak trips on the reef, kitesurfing, deep-sea fishing and sundowner dhow trips are all exciting options for adrenaline junkies looking for some physical activity after the relatively sedentary experience of being on safari.

As with many sea-based activities, timing is governed by the tides and water levels.
