Kenya
A simple, family-friendly safari camp located on the banks of the Talek River, just outside the Masai Mara National Reserve.
Tipilikwani Mara Camp offers great value for money and an ideal base for exploring the rich wildlife of the Masai Mara ecosystem. The twenty tented rooms are raised on wooden platforms, all with en suite bathrooms and a small balcony to the front.
The heart of the camp is the thatched dining and lounge area, with plentiful sofas and armchairs to relax in and chat with fellow guests. Interesting art and hand-crafted furnishings from across Kenya and further afield add to the rustic charm.
Days are spent on game drives in the morning and afternoon, or setting out for a full day with a picnic lunch. Cultural visits to a nearby Maasai community can also be arranged.

Our stay in the camp fully delivered to our expectations and even more! Serian is a small sized camp with a very personal approach allowing flexibility for the wild life experience. Well experienced and friendly management even helped us to drive to another conservancy to be able to have a sighting of a cheetah with 6 cubs. The Camp offers all necessary comfort in the bush and the service is great. The drivers / guides (John and Marc) are absolutely top! As a couple we had a private vehicle (as guaranteed by Serian). The game area is very nice and not too crowdy allowing off-road and a max of 5 vehicles per sighting (which is respected). On our 4 nights stay we saw many lions and cheetah and were lucky to see a leopard. We spent one day in the Mara Reserve which was also a nice experience (great sightings close to the road and not too crowdy). During our stay the camp hosted a professional photographer (Trai Anfield) who joined us (on our request) on a drive providing tips for better photography: a nice extra. - FilipA420
As the autumn weather starts settling in here in the northeast US my thoughts go to the soul rousing three weeks my wife and I spend in East Africa this past July. One of our fondest memories centers on the beautiful and overwhelmingly welcoming Alex Walker's original Serian camp located in the heart of the Mara North Conservancy in Kenya about 155 miles west of Nairobi, half the distance to Lake Victoria in the lush and gorgeous Masai Mara. The area is teeming with an amazing variety of mammals and birds both large and small. For you reptile lovers, lots of crocs as well. Almost as soon as you head out from the small Mara North bush airstrip you are almost instantly surrounded by elephant, zebra, giraffe, Topi, Thompson and Grant gazelle (and numerous other species of antelope), and these are just the incidental sightings on the short trip from the strip to the camp. The Serian camp itself, located on a high bank only yards above the Mara River, consists of several thatched structures containing the dining and other common areas and "tents" appointed with comfy four poster beds, wooden floors and hand knotted rugs, suggesting that you have arrived at a relative's welcoming home rather than an exotic camp over a 100 miles from the nearest urban population center. - NY J99999
For us the best thing about this lodge was having your own vehicle and guide/driver. Nothing could be more exclusive for us (and other wildlife loving people) than that! Our tent was the stuff of legend. Huge! Big veranda and day beds for lazing around on hot afternoons! During the day it opens on all sides - felt like we were living in the middle of the mara! On the riverfront! Don't think we have ever felt this close to nature and this relaxed before. Food was good. Desserts even better. Service incomparable and very personal! We had a great rapport with the whole team there - won't mention names as everyone was amazing. Best wishes from Dhruv and Kavita (Nairobi) - ativakUK
