Celebrating our Women; Meet Jen

This women’s month, we are celebrating the wonderful work that the ladies of Asiliado on a daily basis.

– Tell us a bit about yourself and what it is that you do?

I was born in South Africa, where I was, along with my sister and brother, brought up on small holding farms. I was home schooledthroughout high school. After finishing school I tried a few different job’s, mostly in hospitality, Restaurants, hotels etc. I tried doing a few other things such as game farming, aerial photography, shop keeping. My strong point was hospitality. I loved the bush, so to start a career in game lodges was right where I wanted to be. The best of both, hospitality and living in the bush.

– How did your journey with Asilia begin?

I have not been with Asilia for very long, only around 8 months, but have so far enjoyed my journey with them and working as Sayari Camp’s manager. I have already learnt so much, have found strengths and weaknesses I didn’t know I had. So far my time with Asilia has been an incredible one. Everyone has been so helpful, friendly and accommodating along the way. I look forward to what I hope to be a long, educational, exciting experience with Asilia.

– What is the best thing about your job?

I think I have a few! Firstly the staff I work with on a daily basis. We have an incredible team. They all work hard, are always smiling and all seem to have a very positive outlook on everything. I enjoy accomplishing the challenges we have when working in a remote area and getting to meet interesting people for all over the world. Over and above this we also get to live in a really beautiful place.

– How long have you and your husband been managing campr for?

We have both been working on and off in the Safari industry for approximately 12 to 13 years. Richard mostly on the guiding and training side, and myself in the hosting and management side.

– What is it about being a camp manager that you love the most?

The feeling of being apart of something important and the different experience we have on a daily basis.

– Tell us something about yourself that not many people may know.

The first job I had in hospitality was, scullery, I washed dishes, cleaned the kitchen and buttered many loafs of bread, for our local yacht club near my home town. I never studied hospitality and have worked up from there. I could drive a tractor before I could drive a car and I enjoy making puzzles.
