Encounter with Lions at Namiri Plains

Yesterday afternoon two male lions decided to get some relief from the African sun and cool themselves off in the shade of our Main Tent area at Namiri Plains. Guests were happy to have that afternoon’s meal on their laps and watch from a safe distance as the two males from the Kibumbu Pride cooled down.

The Kibumbu Pride is made up of six male lions who have just recently made the area surrounding Namiri Plains their home. They are starting a new pride and have already been seen having a squabble with two male lions from the Barafu Pride.

For those of you who may be a bit wary of having such furry lunch guests – do not worry. All Asiliacamps, in both Kenya and Tanzania, have dedicated Askari guides who work both night and day, they are trained to constantly have their eyes and ears peeled for any wildlife who may wander into camp.

The guests at Namiri Plains were aware of these two lions before the lions decided to take a break in the shade as these two brothers had already spent a couple of days on the other side of the stream in front of camp devouring a buffalo they had taken down. Guests were notified that lunch had moved as the lions had claimed the dining tent for themselves – all guests happily obliged and enjoyed this once-in-a-lifetime moment from a distance.
