Trip Overview

Lolkisale Horseback Safari
Explore a part of Northern Tanzania where few travellers have ventured, combining a horseback safari with drives in vintage Series 1 Land Rovers for an experience that harks back to the early days of safari.
You’ll be staying in a pared-back mobile camp on the greater Tarangire ecosystem, near the Lolkisale Mountain, where you will ride among zebra, giraffe, lesser kudu and other plains game. There are numerous Maasai villages in this area, seldom seen or visited by tourists that can be visited as part of your ride for those interested in learning more about Maasai culture.
The area is located southwest of Arusha and east of Tarangire National Park, making this adventure easy to fit into the start of any safari. This trip is designed for intermediate to strong riding levels, but accommodates riders who find three full days of riding too strenuous.
Non-rider partners or friends can join the adventure and explore the ranch on drives in the Series 1 Land Rovers, enjoying a vintage experience and trying their hand at driving a safari vehicle under the guidance of one of the team, or enjoy guided walks in the area.
Itinerary Details

Arrive in Arusha or Kilimanjaro Airport and transfer by road (around 45-minutes’ drive from the airport) to Giraffe Residence on the Dolly Estate, a peaceful leafy area of Arusha. Settle into your accommodation and enjoy lunch by the pool, watching whatever wildlife is grazing nearby. In the afternoon, you’ll meet your horses and try your hand at polo with one of the instructors, learning some of the basics of stick and ball. Alternatively, if you time your visit right, you can enjoy watching one of the regular polo matches in the late afternoon/early evening (normally on Wednesdays, Saturdays, and Sundays). An optional extra is a scenic helicopter ride over Mount Meru (at an additional cost). Gather for sundowners at the polo club before returning to the residence for dinner.
