Ragati Cabin Retreat
The 5,000-hectare Ragati Conservancy on the lower slopes of Mount Kenya is an idyllic retreat that perfectly complements a safari elsewhere in the Laikipia area. The montane forest and Ragati River and tributaries are home to some exceptional birdlife, larger mammals including buffalo and elephant, and rare species such as the African clawless otter and the critically endangered mountain bongo. This is not primarily a wildlife destination. The real draw is the seclusion, opportunity to enjoy forest walks and hikes and some of East Africa’s finest trout fishing. A stay here offers a different environment to explore and the chance to be active, or relax in nature away from the distractions of modern life.
Depart Nanyuki by road in a 4×4 vehicle, driving approximately 2.5 hours to the Ragati conservancy on the lower slopes of Mount Kenya. Your driver will have all of your food and drink supplies for your stay and will help unload these at the log cabin on the conservancy before leaving you in the capable hands of the Ragati team who will give you an orientation about the fishing and walks available and show you the cabin’s facilities. The rest of the day is yours to spend however you wish.

What is included in this Adventure?
Private transfers from Nanyuki to Ragati return in 4×4 vehicle, conservancy fees, guided walks, fishing fees, gillies, firewood, meals and house drinks (limited soft drinks, local beers, and house wines) from lunch on Day 1 to breakfast on Day 3, Asilia conservation charge and Medevac cover.
The log cabin at Ragati is simple and rustic, yet charming and comfortable. There are three double bedrooms, one twin and one with bunk beds; bathroom facilities with hot and cold running water; and a large lounge area with an open fireplace to keep the cabin warm in cooler months. There is no electricity, so lighting is by a solar lamp and food is kept in cool boxes rather than a fridge. The cabins are normally self-catering, but we will provide all of the food and house drinks needed for you to be able to cook yourself delicious meals during your stay.
While you’ll be doing all of the cooking, the staff are on hand to make fires in the cabin and do washing up. The team at Ragati include five fish gillies who can also accompany guests on guided walks. Flies for fishing can be purchased on site. Gumboots, waterproofs and long trousers are recommended due to the forest terrain and stinging nettles. Fishing rods are available for hire but are limited. We recommend that serious fishermen bring their own gear.
