Asilia’s highly successful environmental programme for children is now at Matemwe, Zanzibar

Twende Porini” – Let’s go to the bush, Asilia’s environmental project has been around since 2015. Groups of children from local communities in the areas surrounding our camps in Kenya and Tanzania are hosted at one of our chosen camps for four to five days. During thestay, they learn about wildlife and the importance of protecting animals as well as preserving our areas.

For the first time, Twende Bahrinitook place at Matemwe.

Called “Twende Baharini”, meaning “Let’s go to the beach”, in Swahili, the four-day camps are held at Asilia’s Matemwe properties, where primary school children from the local village are taught about conservation and experience everything we have to offer at Matemwe. From fun guest experiences to educational learning.

Day one of Twende Baharini saw us welcoming the kids to Matemwe and they spent the rest of the afternoon having fun in the sun!

A full day of ocean adventures awaited the group of eight children. They enjoyed a wonderful time out at sea, snorkelling and learning about this unique ecosystem.

To end off the day of adventure at sea we thought of something super special to surprise the children with. We set up a beach cinema experience for our Twende Baharini children using our Ngalawa sailboat – they loved it!

The following day, the kids headed out to one of the sandy islands close to the beach for a private beach lunch. Our executive chef prepared a live cooking experience for the children and our wonderful staff that mentored them for the day.

A Visitto the Mnarani Turtle Centre

The children spent some time at the Mnarani Turtle Centre and learned so much about the turtles, conservation as well as the threats that these turtles face. They also met the baby turtles from a nest we recently rescued. The children were shown a presentation from Zanrec, the responsible waste management and recycling company we use, and shown the importance of recycling and keeping our oceans clean.

We are very happy that the children are already sharing what they have learned about the impact of plastic on our environment, and the toll unsustainable fishing methods have on the ocean.

Thank you Mnarani Turtle Centre for the wonderful tour!

The kids experienced what its like to scuba dive with a test run in our pool. A huge thank you goes out to Scubafish for the amazing time our Twende Baharini children had! We might have some future divers in the making.

Twende Porini – Kenya

Have a look at what they got up to and see how much it means to the kids to be able to experience the wonders of East Africa – something that many of them have never had the opportunity to do.
