Family Safari Experience

On an Asilia Family Safari, both children and adults feel the magic of the plains of East Africa. Choose from a selection of spectacular safari camps in outstanding locations. Base yourself in a rustic secluded bush house or – with only a sheet of canvas between you and the stars – in one of our beautifully designed and supremely comfortable tented safari camps.

Most of our camps are suitable to children aged five and up, although younger children may be accommodated by special arrangement – some camps can be booked on an exclusive-use basis or if a camp is quiet we may be able to accommodate children younger than five.  Our camps have quite a large number of vehicles so where possible families will enjoy their own private vehicle and guide for their morning and evening game drives. Note that private vehicles and guides can also be guaranteed if booked in advance for an additional fee.

Our professionally trained bush guides are all family men who have been raised on these plains themselves. They have a wealth of experience and intimate bush knowledge that has been handed down through generations. They will watch over you and captivate your kids with bush-wise facts, traditional games, local folklore, incredible stories of life in the bush and extraordinary sightings. We can’t wait to welcome you to a natural world where adventure rules – we guarantee your children will never view life the same way again. Families of six or more will have their own private vehicle and guide for their morning and evening game drives.

 Family Safari Programme

In the camps that are are particularly family-friendly, we offer special activities and programmes for children so that they are happily entertained and gain an enormous amount out of their time on safari in East Africa. Our Children’s Safari Programme is run by the same professional guides who take you on daily game drives, so kids benefit from expert insights and experience. They will learn bush skills and how to identify animal tracks, go on guided bush walk, and visit a nearby community or school to learn about the customs of East Africa, make pen-pals and buy local handicrafts.

Children’s safari programme available at:

  • Kenya: Mara Bush Houses (Mara House, Acacia House and Topi House) and Naboisho Camp.
  • Tanzania: Rubondo Island

Our Family-Friendly Camps

Families are warmly welcomed at all of our camps and lodges. However, due to location and available facilities, some may be more suited to families than others. Our ‘Good/Better/Best’ family suitability rating system will help you choose the right safari experience for you and your family.

Family Suitability Level - GOOD

Families with children aged five and older are warmly welcomed in these camps, however we do not offer special family tents, activities for children or personal guides. Children are accommodated in a separate tent or by adding a third bed to a tent; we strongly recommend that children below 12 always share a room/tent with an adult.

Nomadic Camp
Ubuntu Camp

Family Suitability Level - BETTER

A larger family tent with separate bedrooms can accommodate up to five family members. We love catering for the individual needs of families, however safety is always our top priority and the wilderness environment in these camps is not conducive to providing a specific outdoor safari programme for children.

Families of six or more are guaranteed a private safari vehicle at no extra cost in low season. In high season, families with children under 12 are obliged to use a private game-viewing vehicle at an additional cost.

Family Suitability Level - BEST

These camps offer excellent family safaris. Personal attention, guiding, accommodation and service are focused on creating a superb safari experience for adults and children alike. Our Kids’ Safari Programme adds an extra layer of wonderful experiences for your children. These camps have no minimum age restrictions. However, parents are required to sign a waiver for children under five, and must be indicate how many children are included when they book. This does not include Rubondo Island, where the minimum age is five.

Note that our exclusive-use beach villa on Zanzibar, Matemwe Beach House (with its own private chef and activity guide) is superb for family beach holidays even though there is no designated children’s activity programme.
