11-Day East Africa Conservation Focussed Adventure

This thoughtfully curated itinerary brings together three of Tanzania’s most pioneering conservation areas, offering a safari experience that goes far beyond traditional game viewing.

From chimpanzee tracking on a remote island in Lake Victoria to predator research in the Serengeti and community-led conservation in southern Ruaha, this journey connects you to the people, projects and wildlife shaping the future of Africa’s wilderness.

Beginning in the lush foothills of Mount Kilimanjaro, the adventure quickly takes you west to Rubondo Island, a true hidden gem and one of the few places in East Africa where chimpanzees can be tracked in the wild. From here, travel into the eastern Serengeti, where Namiri Plains offers exclusive access to a thriving population of big cats, before ending in the vast and untouched landscapes of Usangu in southern Ruaha – a vital conservation corridor and one of Tanzania’s newest protected areas.

With each destination offering a distinct ecosystem and conservation story, this itinerary is ideal for travellers seeking a deeper, more meaningful safari experience, without compromising on exceptional wildlife encounters and immersive guiding.

Itinerary Details

Day 1: Arrival beneath Kilimanjaro
  • Arrival beneath Kilimanjaro
  • Transfer to Arusha
  • Overnight at Rivertrees Country Inn

On arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport, you will be met by an Asilia driver and transferred to Rivertrees Country Inn, a tranquil lodge set within lush gardens along the Usa River. The short drive offers your first glimpse of northern Tanzania, with views of Mount Meru on clear days.

Spend the afternoon at leisure, relaxing by the pool or strolling through the shaded grounds, before enjoying a delicious dinner and a restful night ahead of your safari adventure.

Day 2 - 4: Chimpanzees of Rubondo Island
  • Fly to Rubondo Airstrip
  • Chimp tracking, forest walks and boat safaris
  • Overnight at Rubondo Island Camp

After breakfast, transfer to Arusha Airport for your scheduled flight to Rubondo Island National Park, set within the vast waters of Lake Victoria. On arrival, you will be met by your guide and transferred to camp, enjoying your first introduction to this unique island ecosystem along the way.

Rubondo is unlike anywhere else in East Africa. Once designated as a refuge for rescued wildlife, the island is now home to a small population of habituated chimpanzees, as well as elephant, giraffe, sitatunga and a remarkable diversity of birdlife. The dense equatorial forest and lakeshore setting create an atmosphere of true wilderness and exploration.

Chimp tracking is a highlight of your stay, led by experienced guides who monitor the resident groups. While sightings cannot be guaranteed, the experience of tracking through the forest, listening for calls and signs of movement, is an adventure in itself. Additional activities include game drives across the island, catch-and-release fishing, and boat excursions along the lake’s edge, offering a different perspective on this extraordinary environment.

Day 5 - 7: Big Cats of the Eastern Serengeti
  • Fly to the Serengeti National Park
  • Game drives and cheetah research experiences
  • Overnight at Namiri Plains

After breakfast, transfer to the airstrip for your flight to the eastern Serengeti. On arrival, you will be welcomed by your guide from Namiri Plains and transferred to camp, arriving in time for lunch.

Closed to tourism for over two decades, this remote corner of the Serengeti has become a stronghold for predators, particularly cheetah. Today, Namiri Plains offers exclusive access to this remarkable ecosystem, with limited vehicle numbers and exceptional guiding.

Game drives explore the open plains and rocky kopjes, where lion, cheetah and leopard thrive alongside large herds of plains game. Guests also have the opportunity to gain insight into ongoing conservation work in the area, including collaborations with researchers studying predator behaviour and ecology.

Days here follow a relaxed safari rhythm, with morning and afternoon game drives, optional bush walks, and time to unwind in camp overlooking the endless plains.

Days 8 - 10: Remote Wilderness in Usangu, Ruaha
  • Fly to Usangu Airstrip
  • Game drives, walking safaris and conservation experiences
  • Overnight at Usangu Expedition Camp

Your journey continues south to one of Tanzania’s most remote and exciting conservation areas. After breakfast, fly to Usangu in the southern reaches of Ruaha National Park, where you will be met and transferred to Usangu Expedition Camp.

This little-visited region forms part of a vital watershed and wildlife corridor, playing a crucial role in the long-term health of Ruaha’s ecosystems. Vast floodplains, seasonal wetlands and miombo woodland create a diverse landscape that supports a growing population of wildlife, including elephant, lion, leopard and large herds of buffalo.

Activities are centred around exploration and discovery, with game drives, night drives, and guided walking safaris offering an intimate understanding of the area. With very few visitors, sightings are often entirely private, and the sense of remoteness is profound. Time spent here also provides insight into the conservation efforts that are helping to restore and protect this important landscape.

Day 11: Departure
  • Flight to Dar es Salaam
  • Connect to onward travel

After a final morning in the bush, transfer to the airstrip for your flight to Dar es Salaam, where your journey comes to an end.
