East Africa is home to some of the most diverse and spectacular wildlife on the planet, as well as rich ancient cultures and fascinating traditions. But this region also faces many challenges, such as poverty, environmental degradation, and human-wildlife conflict. How can tourism help to address these issues and create a more sustainable future for the region?
One answer is Asilia Africa. We are a leading safari and boutique camp operator offering an array of exciting, authentic, impactful wildlife and community experiences. As a Nawiri Group member, we are a B Corp Certified organisation, working alongside responsible travel companies, local communities, and expert partners to deliver long-term positive impact at scale across Africa. Asilia’s mission is to empower the people and places of East Africa by creating sustainable tourism economies. Achieving and maintaining certification is rigorous and must be continuously monitored, with recertification required every three years.
What does this mean for Asilia?
All activities and aspects of the business, from our legal structure and decision-making processes, employee policies and practices, ethical and transparent dealings with our clients, and how we engage and interact with the conservation and community projects, are scrutinised. By measuring our business’ social and environmental impact, the achievement of our B Corp Certification reflects our commitment to being a force for good and effecting significant change in the world.
B Corp certification also turns the ambiguous concepts of “going green” or “being a good corporate citizen” into something tangible and measurable that people can identify, trust, and support.
In 2004, Asilia Africa was born when two family-run safari companies with deep roots in Kenya and Tanzania merged their passionate and decades-long experience, family spirit, and commitment to the region. Today, we employ nearly 1,000 people in 19 bespoke intimate camps and lodges in Kenya and Tanzania. Staying in our beautiful camps, enjoying our marvellously warm hospitality and savouring our delicious cuisine is only half the story when you join Asilia on the safari journey of a lifetime. You also support our ongoing conservation efforts, bringing meaningful and sustained change to the region.
Some of the projects that Asilia Africa supports.
Via our projects, you help us support and empower local women to use their traditional Maasai beadwork to improve their lives and the lives of those in their community and families, as well as the youth, with career guidance and scholarship programs through the Maa Beadwork Project. The Mara Predator Conservation Program monitors and conserves cheetahs through the Serengeti Cheetah Project and the Chimpanzee Habituation Project, helping to habituate and protect chimpanzees on Rubondo Island on Lake Victoria. Our support for the environment extends to protecting the fragile Usangu Wetlands in Ruaha National Park and beyond. You will also be able to interact with our local communities, learn about their culture, history, and challenges and experience how tourism can benefit them through training, education, and environmental protection.
Our vision, being a proud B Corp certified safari company, is to offer you authentic safaris that make a genuine difference to the people, wildlife and myriad environments of East Africa. By choosing Asilia for your safari adventures, you will enjoy extraordinary experiences with fantastic wildlife sightings and contribute to a better and viable future for this unique region’s people, cultures, ecology and animals.
