Wildlife trackers are commonly encountered in Southern Africa, where the guide and tracker work together. Typically, the tracker has a seat on the very front of the safari vehicle, and it’s their job to read the signs in nature that may indicate the presence of wildlife. Signs include footprints, droppings, broken branches, and the alarm calls of other birds and animals.
Trackers are also skilled at reading the animals and will know when it’s time to leave a sighting or if the animal is showing signs of aggression, ensuring that guests’ safety is always a priority. Trackers also provide conservation support by assisting wildlife monitoring programmes and reporting signs of poaching or illegal activities.

Are safari guides armed?
When out in a safari vehicle, your guide is not likely to be armed. Not only are firearms prohibited within national parks, but your guide is an expert in animal behaviour, so they will ensure you retreat when the wildlife shows any signs of annoyance.
On walking safaris, however, your guide will carry a firearm, although these are only ever used in extreme cases and as a last resort.
