The Educational Side of an African Safari: Learning from Guides and Trackers

If you’re coming on an African safari expecting just another vacation, you’re in for a treat. Not only is it a truly unique experience, but a safari in Africa is a transformative experience that will open your eyes and mind to the unbelievable beauty of nature, the rich cultures of Africa’s people, and the interconnectedness that we all share.

At the heart of any safari experience are the skilled safari guides and wildlife experts who bring to life the intricacies of the bush.

What is the difference between a safari guide/ranger and a wildlife tracker?

A safari guide (or ranger) is the person who leads guests on a safari, while a wildlife tracker assists the guide to find the animals and follow them. Trackers are more common in Southern Africa than in East Africa.

What do African safari guides do?

Their role includes driving the safari vehicle, guiding walking safaris, ensuring safety, and sharing their staggering wealth of knowledge about Africa’s ecosystems. Safari guides have an incredible wealth of knowledge about plant life, wildlife, and the local ecosystems, and they share this knowledge with guests in an engaging way and tailored to your interest.

Safari guides are highly trained in first aid and driving, and maintain a constant level of situational awareness to ensure that guests enjoy the best possible safari experience.

What do wildlife trackers do on safari?

Wildlife trackers are commonly encountered in Southern Africa, where the guide and tracker work together. Typically, the tracker has a seat on the very front of the safari vehicle, and it’s their job to read the signs in nature that may indicate the presence of wildlife. Signs include footprints, droppings, broken branches, and the alarm calls of other birds and animals.

Trackers are also skilled at reading the animals and will know when it’s time to leave a sighting or if the animal is showing signs of aggression, ensuring that guests’ safety is always a priority. Trackers also provide conservation support by assisting wildlife monitoring programmes and reporting signs of poaching or illegal activities.

Asilia guests on a walking safari learn fascinating insights from their guides

What will I learn while on an African safari game drive?

A safari game drive is not a passive experience by any measure. Sure, you’re confined to the safari vehicle for safety, but your mind will be soaking up all kinds of facts.

Wildlife and Ecology

Your Asilia safari guide has a wealth of knowledge about the various species of animals, birds, and insects that you’ll encounter. They also have deep insights into the complex relationships within the ecosystem and the challenges encountered in trying to protect these vulnerable natural areas.

Culture and History

At Asilia, our guides come from the surrounding communities and share stories with guests about the local traditions and customs, as well as the connection between local communities and wildlife.

Practical Bush Skills

But it isn’t simply a flurry of facts; you also get to apply some of the knowledge you learn, like basic tracking techniques, interpreting animal behaviour, bush navigation, and even wildlife photography tips.

What makes a great African safari guide?

A great safari guide is someone who not only loves the African bush but is passionate about sharing that love and transferring it to every guest they encounter. We’re proud to work with some of the most talented safari guides

Charles Matara, a seasoned Asilia guide, recently won “Best Guide in Walking Safari”, “Best Guide in Birding”, and the coveted award for “Best Safari Guide of the Year” at the 2024 Tanzania Tour Guide Awards. “These awards mean a lot. They prove that if you have passion in what you are doing and put the effort into it, great things are possible,” he says.

Are safari guides armed?

When out in a safari vehicle, your guide is not likely to be armed. Not only are firearms prohibited within national parks, but your guide is an expert in animal behaviour, so they will ensure you retreat when the wildlife shows any signs of annoyance.

On walking safaris, however, your guide will carry a firearm, although these are only ever used in extreme cases and as a last resort.
