The best time to visit Kenya’s Indian Ocean islands and beaches is from October to January, November being particularly favourable. During these months, Kenya’s beaches offer ideal conditions for diving and snorkelling. Swimming with whale sharks is fantastic between October and April, as the finest sightings occur from January to March. Throughout the year, Kenya’s Indian Ocean coastline remains hot and humid, but be aware that rain is likely. The wettest and hottest period falls between mid-March and late May, so it’s advisable to avoid Kenya’s coast if possible. Kenya’s beautiful beaches are a sensational and serene way to round off an unforgettable wildlife safari.

Seasonal Overview

June To September

The dry season in Diani Beach, Mombasa and Lamu Island begins in June, providing beautiful sunny weather with occasional rain showers. This month is usually quieter regarding tourism, so the beaches are less crowded. July is milder, and Watamu and Diani Beaches are famous for sunbathing and fantastic water sports. The whale sharks’ breeding season starts in August. Clear waters make snorkelling and diving activities popular. September marks the return of spring, bringing pleasant to hot conditions, particularly on the southern beaches. As this is the peak of the safari season, expect a higher number of tourists and increased accommodation prices.

  • Enjoy the warm and dry days of July to September.
  • Swim with Whale Sharks.

October To January

The short rainy season starts in late October, and warm weather can be enjoyed throughout the coastal region. For culture lovers, November is a great time to attend the annual Mombasa Carnival, featuring two parades filled with energetic music, dancing, and decorative costumes. Now is the best time to visit Kenya’s Indian Ocean islands and beaches. December is warm and festive, with clear and hot days perfect for water sports. Snorkelling and diving around the coral reefs are at their optimum, showcasing optimal sea clarity.

  • The warm weather is ideal for water sports despite periodic short afternoon showers.
  • Visit the energetic Mombasa Carnival Parade for traditional fun and music.

February To May

The Kenyan coast has warm and sunny weather through February and early March, the last of summer and ideal for a beach holiday. March sees the arrival of the long rainy season but the days remain hot and humid. April and May are both very hot and humid, as well as wet due to the long rains. The conditions are generally uncomfortable. The rain also affects visibility in the water, creating sub-optimal conditions for snorkelling and diving.

  • Enjoy the last summer month, ideal for a beach holiday.
  • Explore Diani Beach, Watamu, Mombasa and Lamu Island despite the start of the long rainy season in March
