Asilia are proud to announce that, as part of the Nawiri Group, we have been nominated in the World Sustainable Travel & Hospitality Awards, as the World’s Leading Sustainable Organisation! This recognition honours the work being done across the group to craft life-changing journeys that also protect Africa’s ecosystems, support communities, and contribute to a more sustainable future for travel.

Since the very beginning, our purpose has always been twofold: to share the magic of East Africa’s wild places, and to safeguard them for generations to come.
When you stay with us, you wake to the calls of lions, follow leopard tracks at first light, and end your day around the fire under a sky full of stars sharing stories with those who are deeply connected to the land. These are the moments we’re known for. But behind them is a way of operating that puts sustainability first.
If you love what we do, we’d appreciate your support to help us achieve the title of World’s Leading Sustainable Organisation.

About Asilia
Asilia is leading the transition to low-emission safari transport, piloting electric vehicle (EV) conversions. Building on earlier trials, these conversions aim to create rugged, quiet, and reliable safari vehicles that run efficiently on renewable energy.
Operating in remote wilderness means solar is our cleanest and most sustainable energy option. Today, 76% of the energy used across our safari operations comes from the sun.

We’re overhauling our energy infrastructure to maximise efficiency, integrating solar heat exchange systems and monitoring per-room energy use. Long-duration renewable storage, such as hydrogen from surplus solar, is being explored to future-proof our off-grid power. These steps ensure we use every unit of generated energy efficiently while reducing fossil fuel reliance.

Water is a precious resource in the landscapes where we operate. All our properties harvest rainwater, and we are expanding greywater recycling to reuse water for non-potable needs, including washing safari vehicles. This reduces our draw on local water sources and supports our goal of halving water use per benight.

We take a rigorous approach to waste: all materials are sorted at source into plastics, glass, metals, paper, and organics; weighed; and transported off-site for certified recycling. We’ve eliminated single-use plastic water bottles and reduced total plastic waste by 13% year-on-year. Food waste is composted, with biogas digestors in pilot use to convert methane from compost into cooking gas.

Our hydroponic Vertical Farm at Encounter Mara is set to produce up to 70% of the camp’s fresh vegetables, supplying also Naboisho and Rekero camps. Powered entirely by solar and rainwater, it grows over 26 varieties of herbs and vegetables in a closed-loop system with no soil and zero water run-off. This reduces transport emissions, cuts packaging waste, ensures freshness, and provides guests with the opportunity to pick ingredients alongside our chefs.
