My Highlands Experience – A personal account

By Nikita Hotlzhauzen

As we ventured through the gate of the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, the world around me began to transform, transporting me to a time past when dinosaurs roamed the earth. Surrounded by dense, emerald-green vegetation, the journey was both mystical and exhilarating as if I had stepped into a realm where nature reigned supreme.

Ascending the winding road to The Highlands, roughly a 2-hour drive from the park gate, I noticed the scenes around me begin to change. Emerging from the dense thicket of lush greenery, the road winds away from the Ngorongoro Crater and a lively essence fills the air. I was captivated by the unique beauty of the changing landscapes and the daily activities of the locals we encountered along the way. Their presence added a vibrant layer to the already enchanting scenery.

Arriving at an Asilia camp is always a joyous occasion, no matter how many times you’ve been there before. The Highlands staff greeted us with the warmest hospitality, their sincerity and kindness shining through every interaction. Situated about as high as Mount Kilimanjaro’s halfway point, the camp offered unparalleled views over the rolling hills, amidst lush greenery and endless skies adorned with billowy clouds. Stepping onto the balcony of my room, I was often greeted by this mesmerising sight, etching unforgettable memories in my mind.

Despite the steep walk to the main area from the rooms, each step was a rewarding journey through nature’s wild beauty. Every stroll allowed me to pause and absorb the serenity, imprinting the tranquil scenes deep within my soul.

A standout experience was the Olmoti Crater hike, a journey filled with enchantment and wonder. Taking our time, we savoured every moment, surrounded by an array of sights, sounds, and scents—discovering trees, flowers, and insects previously unknown to me. The culmination of the hike, reaching the crater’s summit, left me speechless as I witnessed the breathtaking vistas that stretched before me. The cascading waterfall, a powerful presence amidst the serene landscape, captivated my senses as we ventured towards the rushing river, navigating through the surrounding vibrant foliage.

Interacting with the local Maasai was a rewarding and genuine experience.

Immersing myself in the local culture was a profoundly moving experience, particularly visiting a Maasai village within walking distance from the camp. Overcoming language barriers with the help of our Maasai guide, Shinoi, we engaged in heartfelt exchanges and learned basic greetings and expressions in Maa. Initially unsure of our presence, we sat quietly with them, gradually building trust and mutual understanding. Witnessing their harmonious way of life, marked by diligence and grace in their roles, filled me with humility and admiration.

The landscapes surrounding their village exuded an indescribable beauty and peace that resonated deeply within me, a testament to their deep connection with their homeland. As the sun began to set and it was time to bid farewell, the stoic expressions that greeted us upon arrival had transformed into warm smiles, a touching farewell that spoke volumes of our shared experiences and newfound understanding.

My stay at The Highlands surpassed all expectations, immersing me in surreal landscapes that transported me to a forgotten world. Whether traversing from my room to the main camp, descending into the Ngorongoro Crater for wildlife encounters, or embarking on hikes through the Olmoti and Empakaai Craters, each moment unravelled new dimensions of nature, culture, and wildlife, disconnecting me from the familiar and bringing me closer to the essence of life itself.
