Three Asilia camps. Three different corners of this incredible ecosystem. Three different experiences. At a distance, they may seem very similar – gorgeous, tented suites and golden-hour game drives. But if you’re at the crossroads of choosing which of these camps is the best for you and your travel companions, we’re here to help.
We’re familiar with the Serengeti Paradox: the more choices there are, the harder it can be to choose. So, let’s cut through the noise: Sayari, Namiri Plains, and Dunia aren’t just in different locations; each offers a unique experience with a distinct personality. One is the front-row thrill-seeker. One is a reclusive scientist. And one? She’s all heart.
Let’s find your match.
Sayari Camp: The Frontier of Luxury & The Great Migration
The Vibe: Sleek, contemporary, unapologetically luxurious. Sayari Camp in the Northern Serengeti is the kind of place that makes you wonder how something this polished exists in the middle of a wilderness. Mahogany floors. Fine linens. An infinity pool that seems to melt into the savannah. For families and small groups, The Retreats at Sayari offer unrivalled exclusivity, including a private vehicle and guide, a chef, and a safari at your pace.
The Draw: Location, location, location. Sayari sits in the Kogatende area of the Northern Serengeti, right in the thick of the Mara River crossings. This is where the Great Migration turns cinematic – thousands of wildebeest plunging headlong across rivers dotted with crocodiles lying in wait, dust clouds rising, predators circling. It’s chaotic, breathtaking, and not to be missed.
Wildebeest Migration Timing: The peak drama runs from July to October, when the herds cross back and forth across the Mara River. But here’s an insider tip: Sayari reopens in June after the long rains, when the landscape is impossibly green, and high-season pricing hasn’tkicked in yet. And from November to March? The crowds disappear. The northern Serengeti is an exclusive haven for resident wildlife – black rhino, leopard, lion, cheetah – with almost no other vehicles in sight.
Best For: Travellers who want front-row seats to the migration drama. Couples, honeymooners, and families looking for a high-end safari with a swimming pool in the Northern Serengeti. The sort of person who wants their morning coffee served on a private veranda overlooking a landscape that inspired The Lion King.

Namiri Plains: The Kingdom of Big Cats & Secluded Silence
The Vibe: Sophisticated, understated, and deeply focused on the wild. The secluded Namiri Plains is an ode to its natural history, featuring local stone that reflects its volcanic heritage and interiors that are stylish without overshadowing the natural splendour of this predator-rich region.
The Draw: This area of the Eastern Serengeti was closed to the public for over 20 years to allow cheetah populations to recover. It reopened in 2014, with Asilia appointed as custodian. Namiri Plains quickly became one of the continent’s most exclusive safari destinations. The name means “big cat” in Swahili, and it delivers. This is the best place to see cheetahs in the Serengeti. Lions and leopard populations also thrive here.
Wildebeest Migration Timing: Between late October and mid-December, the mega-herd makes its way through the central and eastern flank of the Serengeti, grazing its way towards the birthing grounds of the southern grass plains. Timing a visit to Namiri Plains to coincide with their movement past the camp is incredibly fortuitous but, for those that manage to get it right, they will be gifted with a two-week period during which the surrounding plains are swamped with wildebeest and the big cats of Namiri are in their element.
Best For: Serious photographers. Wildlife purists. Anyone who prioritises exclusive sightings. If the idea of a solitary cheetah stalking prey across an empty golden plain – no other vehicle in sight – makes your heart race, Namiri is your camp. It’s also rewarding for first-time safari-goers: the predator density means sightings are frequent and thrilling, which is exactly what you want on your first drive. Families and groups can choose exclusivity at The Retreats at Namiri Plains.

Dunia Camp: The Heart of the Serengeti & Empowered Hospitality
The Vibe: Warm. Soulful. Vibrant. All-female-run Dunia Camp is the kind of place people cry when they leave – and that’s not an exaggeration, that’s a consistent theme in guest reviews. As the only camp in the Serengeti run entirely by women – from the camp manager to the guides to the chefs – the energy here is unlike anything else in the Serengeti. It’s not a gimmick. It’s a philosophy. And it changes the way a safari feels.
The Draw: First, the location. Dunia sits in the south-central Serengeti. It gives access to three of the park’s best game-viewing areas: the Seronera Valley (excellent year-round wildlife), the Moru Kopjes (a black rhino sanctuary where big cats love to lurk), and the open plains of the southern Serengeti where the wildebeest give birth.
But what really sets Dunia apart is the team. The women who run this camp bring an energy and attention to detail you need to experience to understand.
Wildebeest Migration Timing: The migration passes through Dunia’s central territory from March to June as herds move northward. It returns in November and December as they move south through the central Serengeti. This makes Dunia a versatile migration camp – offering excellent family-friendly safari accommodation, genuine migration access much of the year, and outstanding resident wildlife in between.
Safe safari camps for solo female travellers in Tanzania are in high demand, and Dunia is the answer. But Dunia is also a great option for families, couples, and groups.
Best For: Travellers who want a deeply human connection alongside world-class wildlife. Families (children aged 5 and up), solo female travellers who want to feel seen, safe, and inspired. And anyone who believes the people are as important as the place.

Frequently Asked Questions: Comparing Serengeti Camps
It depends on which chapter of the migration you want to witness. For dramatic Mara River crossings, Sayari Camp in the Northern Serengeti is best from July to October. For the calving season in the southern plains (typically January to March), Asilia’s mobile camps are your best bet. And for something in between, the all-female-run Dunia Camp sees the herds pass through from March to June and from October to May.
Dunia is the only camp in the Serengeti run entirely by women. Every member of the team is female – from the camp manager to the guides and chefs. The energy this creates is extraordinary. It’s a pioneering model of women’s empowerment in a male-dominated industry. Its central Serengeti location also provides access to three prime game-viewing areas. This makes it one of the most versatile camps in the park.
Not at all. Namiri Plains feels incredibly secluded. That’s exactly the point. It offers some of the highest predator densities in the Serengeti. For a first-time visitor, that means frequent and thrilling big cat sightings on your very first game drive.
Absolutely – and this is one of the great advantages of travelling with Asilia. The camps complement each other perfectly. Stay seven or more consecutive nights across only Asilia properties, and inter-camp flights and transfers are included, making multi-camp itineraries both seamless and excellent value.
All three camps welcome children aged five and up. Each offers a family tent or suite. The Retreats at Sayari and at Namiri Plains give families complete flexibility and their own space. Dunia’s central location and shorter drive times make it practical for families with young children. The all-female team also creates an especially nurturing atmosphere.
