The Asilia Edit is a curated collection of small group tours designed to bring together like-minded travellers in some of East Africa’s most remarkable landscapes. Each itinerary has been carefully crafted to reflect a distinct safari style, balancing iconic experiences with Asilia’s signature approach to conservation, community, and authentic hospitality.

In our previous series, we unpacked each of the four itineraries of The Asilia Edit – The Classic, Untamed, Primate, and Signature Editions – exploring what makes them unique. In this new series, we turn our attention to the camps themselves: the foundations upon which each journey is built. Why these camps? What makes them the perfect fit for each itinerary? And how do they bring the essence of each edition to life?
The Classic Edition
We begin where many safaris do – with The Classic Edition. This itinerary follows the well-trodden northern circuit of Tanzania, but with thoughtful refinements that elevate it beyond the expected. At its heart are three camps that embody the spirit of a traditional East African safari while offering depth, variation, and a sense of progression: Oliver’s Camp, The Highlands, and Namiri Plains.
Oliver’s Camp: Where the Classic Safari Began
Every classic safari has its roots in simplicity – canvas tents, open fires, and the rhythm of the wild dictating the day. Oliver’s Camp, set deep within Tarangire National Park, captures this essence beautifully.

As one of the pioneering camps in the region, Oliver’s began as a modest, mobile-style operation and has evolved into a permanent camp without losing its original character. There is an intentional restraint here – nothing feels overbuilt or out of place. Instead, the camp blends seamlessly into its surroundings, offering a safari experience that feels both grounded and genuine.
Tarangire itself is often described as one of Tanzania’s hidden gems. While it forms part of the northern circuit, it remains quieter than its more famous counterparts. This makes it the ideal starting point for The Classic Edition: a place where guests can ease into the safari experience without the immediacy of crowds.
What truly sets Oliver’s apart, however, is its emphasis on traditional safari activities. Walking safaris are a cornerstone here, offering a slower, more intimate way to engage with the bush. Led by expert guides, these walks strip away the barrier of the vehicle and invite guests to notice the smaller details – the tracks, the scents, the subtle signs of life that often go unnoticed.

Game drives, too, are exceptional, particularly given Tarangire’s renowned elephant populations and seasonal concentrations of wildlife along the Tarangire River. But it is the balance of activities, combined with the camp’s understated charm, that makes Oliver’s the perfect introduction to the Classic Edition. It sets the tone: authentic, immersive, and deeply connected to the landscape.
The Highlands: Reframing a Classic Destination
From Tarangire, the journey continues to one of Tanzania’s most iconic regions – the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. For many itineraries, this means a stay on the crater rim, often accompanied by busy viewpoints and a sense of shared space. The Classic Edition takes a different approach.

The Highlands offers a reframing of the Ngorongoro experience. Located on the slopes of the Olmoti Volcano, far from the main crater rim, the camp introduces a sense of isolation and elevation – both literally and figuratively.
Architecturally, The Highlands is striking. Its dome-shaped suites, inspired by traditional Maasai bomas, are unlike anything else in the region. Yet despite their modern design, they feel entirely at home in this dramatic highland setting. Floor-to-ceiling windows open onto sweeping views of forested slopes and distant peaks, creating a constant connection to the environment.
What makes The Highlands such a strong fit for the Classic Edition is its ability to expand the definition of a classic safari. Yes, the Ngorongoro Crater remains a highlight, and guests will still descend to the crater floor for that sought-after game drive. But the experience does not begin and end there.
Instead, The Highlands invites exploration beyond the obvious. Walks to the summit of Olmoti Volcano, visits to Empakaai Crater, and cultural interactions with local Maasai communities add layers of depth to the stay. These experiences shift the narrative from simply “seeing the crater” to understanding the broader landscape and the people who call it home.

In this way, The Highlands acts as a bridge within the itinerary. It takes the familiar and makes it feel new again – an essential quality in a journey that celebrates the classics while subtly redefining them.
Namiri Plains: A Classic Finale, Perfected
No classic northern circuit safari would be complete without the Serengeti. It is the grand finale – the wide-open plains, the abundant wildlife, the sense of scale that defines the East African safari in the collective imagination. Namiri Plains delivers this experience in its most refined form.

Located in the eastern Serengeti, an area once closed to tourism to allow cheetah populations to recover, Namiri offers a rare combination of exclusivity and wildlife density. This is big cat country in its purest sense. Lions, cheetahs, and leopards are frequently sighted, often in uncrowded conditions that allow for unhurried and meaningful encounters.
For The Classic Edition, Namiri Plains represents the culmination of the journey. After the grounding authenticity of Oliver’s and the exploratory depth of The Highlands, Namiri introduces a layer of sophistication and indulgence.
The camp itself is elegant without being ostentatious. Spacious suites, thoughtful design, and a strong sense of privacy create an atmosphere of understated luxury. This is complemented by a range of experiences that elevate the stay further – hot air balloon safaris drifting over the plains at dawn, spa treatments that offer moments of rest between game drives, and the opportunity to engage with researchers from the Serengeti Cheetah Project.
Yet, at its core, Namiri remains true to the fundamentals of a classic safari. Game drives with expert guides reveal the rhythms of the Serengeti, from predator-prey interactions to the seasonal movements that define this ecosystem. The difference lies in the depth and quality of the experience.

Ending the itinerary here feels both natural and intentional. It is a finish that honours the expectations of a classic Northern Tanzania safari while exceeding them in subtle but meaningful ways.
A Cohesive Classic
What makes these three camps so effective together is not just their individual strengths, but how they work in sequence.
- Oliver’s Camp introduces the essence of safari – raw, authentic, and immersive.
- The Highlands expands the experience, adding perspective, variety, and a sense of discovery.
- Namiri Plains brings the journey to a refined and memorable close, delivering the iconic Serengeti in its most compelling form.

Together, they create a narrative that feels both familiar and fresh. This is the defining quality of The Classic Edition: it honours the traditions of the East African safari while quietly reinterpreting them for the modern traveller. Each camp has been chosen not only for its location, but for how it contributes to this story. From the baobab-dotted landscapes of Tarangire to the misty highlands of Ngorongoro and the endless plains of the Serengeti, the journey unfolds with intention and balance.
In the end, The Classic Camps are more than just places to stay – they are the pillars of an experience that captures the enduring appeal of safari, while reminding us that even the most familiar journeys can still surprise us.
