Rubondo Island’s Hidden Treasures

There are many hidden treasures to be found on Rubondo Island, take a look at our map and be sure to mention these spots to your guide the next time you’re visiting Rubondo Island Camp.

Lying in the southwestern corner of Lake Victoria, Rubondo Island itself is not that big, it is 26 kilometres long and differs from 3 to 10 kilometres in its width. Pristine and untouched equatorial forest make up over three-quarters of its 25 000 hectares and surrounding Rubondo on all sides are the waters of Lake Victoria, which are a vital breeding ground for wildlife such as the tilapia and the enormous Nile perch.

 

Pink Beach

The Pink Beach on Rubondo Island is known as the best place for fly camping and in most cases, elephant always pass by in the evenings to drink water from the lake.This private beach is a 20-minute boat ride from the main Rubondo Island Camp beach. You can spend the night under the stars on the shoreline of Lake Victoria at Pink Beach, we set up a tent, dining area and bathrooms for you to use for the night.

Butterfly Glade

This is honestly the best place to visit if you’re a butterfly lover! Butterfly Glade is filled with different types of butterflies showing off their many different colours and patterns.If you’re heading out on a chimpanzee trek, you’ll come across this magical place. About a 30-minute walk from the opening of the forest, you will walk through the forest clearing, coming out into an open rocky and grassy glade. Here you will see thousandsof butterflies,fireflies and bees, dancing and floating around the foliage of the glade.


Elephant Marsh Land

Elephant Marsh Land is a special place – here you will enjoy spending time with foraging bush pigs, marsh mongeese scurrying around, and of course – herds of elephant who frequent this area.

This special area is best enjoyed from a boating safari, so speak to the manager on duty about heading out to this secret spot…

Sitatunga Bend

Have you heard of the world’s only amphibious antelope, the Sitatunga? Not only do we have them on Rubondo Island but Sitatunga Bend is the best place to watch Sitatunga in their natural habitat as well as allowing you to spend time with our resident bushbucks and Sunni antelope as well.


Daniel’s Beach

Named after our wonderful manager, Daniel, Daniel’s Beach is one of the best-kept secrets of Rubondo Island!

The bedrock of storytelling in the evenings, join us at Daniel’s Beach to hear stories from theman called Daniel, blending this experience withsundowners and the biggest bonfire you’ve seen near the lake! If you’re after a romantic spot to enjoy dinner, this is it.


Daniel likes to say that if all you’re after is aplace to chill in the evening with the coldest glass white winewhile listening to the waves, then this is your spot. In fact, Daniel describes this beach as a stress-free zone, which also happens to be the best place to watch Kasuku birds and Kite birds sunbathing on the beach.

The Wall

TheWall is the best place for all kinds ofsport-fishing – ALL of the biggest Nile perch hang around here! We’re talking monsters weighing up to 70 kgs! You may even be treated to a backside view of the resident Giraffe coming to drink water close to The Wall.

Giraffe Alley


Giraffe Alley
is made up of a mixture of open plains and thick bushes, so it is an entirely unique way of sighting Giraffe in the wild. Giraffe Alley is undoubtedly the best place to watch unhabituated giraffe go about their business, they are always hanging around this area so if you’re wanting to see them be sure to head over here with your guide for an hour or two.

Grassy Savannah

The Grassy Savannah is one of Rubondo Island’s most unique characteristics and is something every guest should go and see just to get a feel for the huge diversity the island has to offer. The Grassy Savanah is the best place to spot the Sitatunga, Bushbuck and the beautiful Sunni antelope as well.
