11-Day Small Group Safari: Walking, Boating & Wildlife in Ruaha and Nyerere National Parks

For the adventurous traveller, The Untamed Edition Small Group Tour is the perfect match. Far from the well-worn tourist tracks, this itinerary captures the raw and untamed beauty of southern Tanzania. With tour options in June and November, this 11-day safari will quench your thirst for exploration.

Picture the raw thrill of a lion hunt unfolding before your eyes, an elephant pushing over a tree, or a raft of hippos splashing in the shallows, all in perfect solitude, far from the crowds. This is the Africa few ever see: peaceful, untouched, and alive with wonder.

In the company of a small group of like-minded travellers, you’ll share the magic of walking safaris, night drives, and stargazing at Usangu Expedition Camp in the far south of the Usangu Wetlands, and again at Kokoko Camp, in the heart of Ruaha, where the skies stretch endlessly overhead. At day’s end, gather around the fire for a delicious dinner under the stars, the sounds of the bush echoing in the distance, from the roar of a lion to the hush of the wind.

Explore the vast and untamed beauty of Nyerere National Park, where Roho ya Selous offers front-row access to the park’s rich diversity. Drift silently along the waterways on a boating safari, track wildlife on foot, and discover an extraordinary range of habitats teeming with life.

This is the ultimate East African safari – one of deep connection, rich variety, and unforgettable moments in the wild.

Itinerary Details

Day 1: Arrival in Dar es Salaam

Accommodation: Four Points By Sheraton Dar Es Salaam

Board Basis: Dinner & Breakfast

Your East African adventure begins in Dar es Salaam, where you’ll be warmly welcomed upon arrival at Julius Nyerere International Airport. You’ll spend the night at Four Points by Sheraton, a comfortable and centrally located hotel that offers the perfect place to unwind before your journey into the wild begins.

Here, you’ll have the opportunity to meet your dedicated safari host and get to know your fellow travellers, the small group of like-minded adventurers who will be sharing this unforgettable experience with you.

Whether you choose to relax by the pool, enjoy a refreshing drink, or take a short stroll to discover the vibrant heart of Tanzania’s capital, this first evening sets a gentle and welcoming tone for the journey ahead.

Day 2-4: Your Wildlife Adventures Await

Accommodation: Usangu Expedition Camp

Board Basis: Game Package

Today you will fly into Ruaha National Park, where your safari starts with a game drive transfer to the remote and wild Usangu Wetlands. Tucked into the woodlands, Usangu Expedition Camp offers a rare and uncrowded safari experience, with just six guest tents ensuring exclusivity and connection with nature and your fellow travellers.

Designed with simplicity and purpose, the camp places exploration at its heart—meals are prepared over an open fire and shared beneath the Ruaha sky. By day, set out on bush walks, game drives, or boating safaris, and errect a camera trap to see what visitors are revealed in the darkness. At night, join your expert guide on a thermal imaging night drive, or spend the evening in the Star Cube, a unique sleep-out under the endless African sky.

This is a place for the curious, the adventurous, and those seeking a deeper, wilder safari.

Day 5-7: An Immersive and Intimate Safari

Accommodation: Kokoko Camp

Board Basis: Game Package

Travel deeper into the wild heart of Ruaha National Park with a scenic road transfer north to Kokoko Camp. Set in one of Africa’s most remote and untouched landscapes, Ruaha is famed for its incredible predator sightings, including lion, leopard, cheetah, wild dog, hyena, and more.

Nestled on the banks of the dry Mwagusi River, Kokoko Camp is a private, expedition-style camp designed for just six guests, offering an exceptionally intimate and uncrowded safari experience. Here, you’ll enjoy the freedom of walking safaris, night drives, and time to simply sit back and absorb the vastness around you.

The camp’s custom-designed rooms feature retractable roofs, perfect for stargazing, while dinners are served in the dry riverbed, surrounded by lanterns and the sounds of the African night. Kokoko offers a rare chance to reconnect, with nature and with your fellow travellers.

The Southern Tanzania Elephant Program offers a powerful opportunity to connect with conservation efforts, gain insight into local traditions, and deepen your understanding of this remarkable region.

Day 8-10: Water Safari Adventures Await

Accommodation: Roho ya Selous

Board Basis: Game Package

Fly into the heart of Nyerere National Park, where your guide will meet you at the airstrip and transfer you to Roho ya Selous, a beautifully positioned camp on a small peninsula overlooking Lake Nzerakera.

As the largest protected reserve in Africa, Nyerere is a vast and wild landscape teeming with life—including wild dog, elephant, hippo, buffalo, giraffe, hyena, and over 400 species of birds. Roho ya Selous offers a truly uncrowded safari experience, ideal for those seeking both adventure and tranquility in nature.

Spend your days exploring the waterways with boating safaris, the surrounding plains through walking excursions, or even trying your hand at fishing. After a day of discovery, cool off in the pool or unwind in the open-sided lounge, enjoying the breeze and the sounds of the bush. The spacious guest tents feature indoor and outdoor showers and an innovative evening breeze cooling system, ensuring a restful end to each day.

Day 11: Farewell

After a final delicious breakfast in camp and heartfelt goodbyes to your guide and fellow travellers, you’ll be transferred to the airstrip for your flight to Julius Nyerere International Airport in Dar es Salaam, where you’ll connect with your onward travel.
