August is arguably one of the most extraordinary times to experience the wild beauty of an African safari. With mild temperatures and optimal wildlife viewing conditions across many regions, it’s an ideal period for travellers seeking unforgettable safari adventures. Whether you’re dreaming of witnessing the dramatic river crossings of the Great Migration or exploring pristine beaches along the coast, Africa in August offers exceptional travel experiences for every type of explorer.

Is August the Ideal Time for an African Safari?

For many safari travellers, August is regarded as the pinnacle of wildlife viewing. The month falls within the dry season in East Africa, creating the perfect conditions for spotting animals as they’re easier to see through the dry, sparse vegetation, and can usually be found congregating around dwindling water sources.

The weather in August is excellent for a safari adventure. In Kenya and Tanzania, mornings and evenings are cooler making game drives more comfortable, while the days remain delightfully warm and sunny.

With all these factors combined, it’s unsurprising that August falls within peak safari season for most popular destinations. With this is in mind, bookings for your African safari in August should be secured at least 9 – 12 months in advance, and sometimes even earlier for popular attractions like the wildebeest migration.

Top Safari Destinations for August

When choosing where to go in Africa in August, several destinations stand out for their exceptional wildlife viewing opportunities and overall incredible experiences. Kenya and Tanzania offer some of the most iconic safari experiences during this month, while the islands like Zanzibar provide the perfect post-safari relaxation.

Kenya in August

Kenya is known for its year-round excellent wildlife viewing, but in August, it’s the backdrop to one of nature’s most spectacular wildlife spectacles when the massive herds of the great wildebeest migration arrive on the plains of Kenya’s Masai Mara. While the dramatic river crossing will have peaked in June and July, there’s still a chance you may see some crossings in August.

Once safely in the Masai Mara, the herds spread out across the plains to graze. The sight of the wide-open expanses heavily peppered with thousands of zebra and wildebeest is an impressive sight to behold.

Aside from the migration, the dry conditions are perfect for game viewing, with animals easier to spot against the arid savanna landscape.

The Greater Masai Mara

The Masai Mara in August is a popular destination for those wishing to see the great wildebeest migration herds. The thrilling river crossings are tapering off and the herds are making the most of the fresh grazing that awaits.

Beyond the migration, the Mara’s resident wildlife remains abundant year-round. Lion prides grow more active as they target the migrating herds, while leopard and cheetah patrol the savanna. Elephant, giraffe, and countless antelope species create a wildlife paradise, making this the best place for a safari in August.

For accommodation within the Masai Mara, Rekero Camp offers an exceptional location overlooking the Talek River, perfectly positioned to witness potential crossings. This intimate tented camp combineds authentic safari ambiance with excellent guiding and a prime location for migration viewing.

Just outside the National Reserve, the Mara Naboisho Conservancy offers a more exclusive safari experience with limited visitor numbers. Providing all the same wildlife drama of the main reserve but with fewer vehicles and a more intimate experience of the landscape.

Mara Naboisho boasts high lion densities as well as substantial populations of elephant, giraffe, and other plains game. The conservancy was set up as an innovative partnership between tourism and the local communities, so your stay here is truly sustainable and directly supports local Maasai communities and conservation.

Accommodation like Encounter Mara, provides the perfect base for exploring this wilderness, with spacious tents that blend luxury with authentic safari elements. The camp’s guides, drawn from the local communities, offer an intimate knowledge and understanding of the ecosystem and wildlife.

The park’s mix of dry lake beds, wetlands, and savanna creates diverse habitats supporting varied wildlife. The clear August skies often offer up spectacular views of Kilimanjaro – an iconic photo opportunity.

Tanzania in August offers predominantly dry conditions with pleasant daytime temperatures and cooler nights. These conditions are ideal for a safari in Tanzania in August.

Wildlife tracking is almost effortless at this time as animals are frequently found near remaining water sources, while reduced vegetation improves visibility across the savanna.

The northern Serengeti in August plays host to the vast herds of the great wildebeest migration. While the timing varies annually depending on rainfall, August typically finds the herds in the northern Serengeti and crossing into Kenya’s Masai Mara.

The dramatic river crossings, where the wildebeest and zebra bravely plunge into the waters of the Mara and Grumeti rivers to reach the fresh grazing on the other side, may still be ongoing in August, providing some epic viewing. Outside of the great migration, the Serengeti’s resident wildlife remains prolific, with the open plains and scattered woodlands supporting impressive concentrations of predators.

Sayari Camp, located in the northern Serengeti, offers luxurious accommodation with excellent access to potential river crossing points, and sweeping views across the sprawling plains.

Ngorongoro Crater is a unique safari destination that excels during August. This ancient volcanic caldera forms a natural enclosure housing approximately 25,000 large animals, including one of Africa’s densest populations of lion. The crater floor, with its diverse habitats ranging from forests and swamps to open grasslands, supports an incredible variety of wildlife within a compact area.

Because the animals are naturally contained within the crater, wildlife viewing is always excellent here. But during the dry season in August, the animals are even easier to find as they quench their thirst at water holes.

Nearby accommodation, such as The Highlands, offers easy access to Ngorongoro and other nearby craters. Guests at The Highlands can enjoy luxury at altitude in iconic domed suites, and Asilia’s industry recognised guides.

The park supports healthy populations of lion, leopard, and some unusual antelope species like the gerenuk and fringe-eared oryx. During August, the permanent water source of the Silale Swamp attracts a high density of wildlife, including massive herds of elephant and water buffalo.

A stay at Oliver’s Camp offers an authentic safari experience in a less-visited but wildlife-rich environment.

For travellers seeking a truly off-the-beaten track safari experience, Ruaha National Park is one of Africa’s most rewarding wilderness destination in August.

August in Ruaha is prime game-viewing time, as the sparse vegetation and predictable wildlife movements around limited water resources create ideal safari conditions. August is also the best time for a walking safari in Ruaha to see wildlife from a difference perspective.

Kokoko Camp provides an exceptional base for exploring Ruaha’s wilderness. This intimate, exclusive-use camp operates specifically during the dry season to capitalise on the exceptional walking safari opportunities.

A gorilla trekking experience represents one of Africa’s most profound wildlife encounters, allowing visitors to spend an hour observing these remarkable creatures in their natural habitat.

Erebero Hills, opening in 2026, will elevate the Bwindi experience by offering not only a luxurious retreat on the edge of the forest, but a sustainable experience positively impacting the local communities.

Kibale Forest National Park

Kibale Forest excels as a destination in August, offering exceptional chimpanzee tracking experiences. The forest hosts one of Africa’s largest populations of chimpanzees, along with 12 other primate species. August’s drier conditions increase the probability of successful tracking as chimpanzees often spend more time on the forest floor when paths are less muddy.
