Things To Do at Saruni Samburu

Set apart from the traditional safari itinerary, Saruni Samburu offers guests the chance to be at one with nature.

Black rhino tracking

The once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to track — and hopefully spot! — this endangered species is just one of the thrills of a Saruni Samburu experience. With the aid of GPS tracking, guests accompanied by an expert guide and a trained conservancy ranger can cross plains and thickets in search of the magnificent back rhino. With luck, you’ll be able to watch its daily routine of browsing for food and wallowing in mud.

Mount Ololokwe

Learn more about Samburu culture and spirituality as you hike their sacred mountain, just a 30-minute drive from the camp. Halfway to the top, stop for a well-earned breakfast of bacon, eggs, fresh fruit, pancakes and coffee. From Mount Ololokwe’s flat top, you’ll have spectacular 360°-views of the conservancy at your feet. An additional reward for the weary climber, a feast of salads and pastas will be waiting for you in the shade of an ancient cave on your descent.

Photographic hide

To pass the sweltering afternoons, take a trip to the elephant-proof photographic hide and work on getting those fabulous shots. The hide is sunken into the earth so that you can photograph at ground level and is located just a few steps from a scenic waterhole. The hide offers a very special opportunity to be within feet of the animals that make up the Samburu Big 5: reticulated giraffe, Grévy’s zebra, gerenuk, Somali ostrich and beisa oryx.

Wellbeing Space

Saruni Samburu is one of two Saruni properties to offer the world-class Wellbeing Space. Run in collaboration with the Grand Hotel des Iles Borromées (in Stresa, Italy), the spa is in a secluded house. Its open front provides awe-inspiring views of the Conservancy — just one of the many features that make this an award-wining retreat.

Techniques from the Centro Benessere Stresa and traditional plant-based treatments from Samburu and Maasai culture have been combined so guests can revel in skin-rejuvenating perfection. Smooth out those aches and pains with a back-and-neck massage (complimentary with your room) or try the popular sports massage; enjoy a purifying facial or tend to your nails with a manicure and pedicure.
