Overnight at The Highlands

Upon waking up from a restful night's sleep and enjoying a delicious breakfast, an Asilia driver will transport you to the nearby Arusha Airport, where you will catch your flight to Lake Manyara Airstrip. After landing, an Asilia driver guide will meet you at the airstrip and help you with your luggage. You will then be driven on a scenic three-hour journey to The Highlands. If you're interested, you can enjoy a 45-minute optional hike up Olmoti Crater during the trip, which offers beautiful panoramic views of the region and an energising stop.

Upon arrival at The Highlands, a mere 40 km (25 miles) from the Ngorongoro Crater, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, you will be shown to your suite. The camp comprises eight unique hilltop Perspex and canvas-domed suites, affording you floor-to-ceiling windows and a curvaceous deck wrapping around the exterior. These are the highest suites in the region, perched on the Olmoti forest's edge, offering sensational views of the distant dormant volcanoes. After settling in, you can join other guests around the cosy crackling fire and enjoy some favourite beverages before indulging in a delicious three-course dinner. Finally, you can stroll down the hill to your accommodation for a peaceful night's sleep.

13. The Highlands Guests View Maasai Guide

Big 5 safari on the Ngorongoro Crater floor

Depart camp early with a picnic breakfast to be on the crater floor with the first light of day. You will descend into the Ngorongoro Crater, a 300 km² wildlife wonderland and the world’s largest intact caldera, with an expert Asilia guide. Explore the diverse habitats and wildlife of the crater, home to the Big 5 and many other animals. The camp will provide a tasty picnic lunch, which you can enjoy beneath a shady tree and capture stunning photos of the scenery and wildlife.

Travel comfortably and in style in our seven-seater safari vehicles equipped with power points and fridges. If your time allows, and at an additional cost, a Maasai cultural visit can be included in the late afternoon on your way back. Alternatively, after a full and exciting day of discovery, head straight back to camp to relax and refresh. Join us by the log fire for a drink of your choice, followed by a mouth-watering dinner. Then, retire to your cosy bed and dream of the wonders you witnessed.

Another exciting day lies ahead after a delicious and warming breakfast. You will be transferred to Lake Manyara Airstrip to connect with your flight to Seronera Airstrip in central Serengeti. On arrival, you will be met and transferred to Dunia Camp.

Dunia, in Tanzania’s central Serengeti, offers a prime position for safari throughout the year. Our hospitable staff will do everything to ensure your comfort. Dunia is the first and only camp in Africa run entirely by women, and the team is an inspirational example of what women can achieve in a male-dominated industry. Comprising of just eight stylish and spacious tents with king-sized beds and ensuite bathrooms offering a hot shower and flushing toilet, your private deck overlooking the sweeping Serengeti savannahs is yours to enjoy during your siesta. You will instantly feel like a family member at Dunia.

Enjoy plentiful resident wildlife without the crowds for two incredible days, exploring the nearby Moru Kopjes in search of lion on the rocks and black rhino roaming the plains. During the annual Great Migration, vast herds of wildebeest move through the camp. Memorable hot-air balloon safaris will take you above and beyond the incredible herds of wildlife. 10. Rubondo Island Private Dining Set Up Around The Pool, Overlooking Lake Victoria

After tearing yourself away from the brilliant women who have cared for you for the past 48 hours, you will be transferred to Seronera Airstrip to connect with your flight to Rubondo Island National Park on Lake Victoria for three glorious nights. Once here, you will embark on a unique adventure in a pristine sub-tropical ecosystem where elephants and chimpanzees roam wild.

Being the only boutique camp on the island, the largest island national park in Africa, the eight waterfront thatched-roofed cottages, hand-built using traditional methods and local materials, offer a haven of peace and tranquillity while being surrounded by tropical forests, home to chimpanzees and African Grey Parrots. Your meals are served outdoors, either on the deck overlooking the lake, or on the beach, where you can relax and dig your toes into the white sands.

Head out to explore the forest on foot, take to the water for catch-and-release fishing and birdwatching, enjoy a morning game drive, or indulge in a leisurely morning in camp with fresh coffee on your veranda and a full breakfast overlooking the lake. Alternatively, you can devote the day to tracking chimpanzees in the dense forests.

The afternoon is time to take a siesta, read a book or cool off in the pool. After resting and refuelling with afternoon tea and freshly baked cakes, head out on a guided forest walk or a sundowner boat cruise with your favourite beverages on board. Round off a special day with drinks around the campfire on the beach and dinner under the sparkling stars.

Rubondo Chimpanzee Habituation Experience

Go chimp trekking

For the experience of a lifetime, spend a day walking deep into the forest with your specialist guide, tracking chimpanzees. There are two chimpanzee trekking areas on Rubondo Island, so depending on where the chimps are situated and their visibility, you may need to take a game drive or boat ride and then venture on foot to find them. Throughout the year, the chimpanzee habituation experience can be conducted according to the availability of food and weather conditions. Chimpanzees are renowned for not sitting still, so you should come prepared with a spirit of adventure and a reasonable fitness level.

Please note that the chimpanzee experience is unsuitable for anyone unable to hike on hilly terrain for about two hours. Chimpanzee sightings are not guaranteed, however, visiting during the dry season from June through October offers adventurers the best chance to spend quality time with our chimpanzees. Please note guests must be over 12 years of age, and the group is a maximum of eight per trek.

12. Rubondo Island Boating Safari On Lake Victoria

Besides the unforgettable chimpanzee trekking experience, there are other enjoyable activities, such as serene boating safaris, catch-and-release fishing, birdwatching, forest walks, game drives, and relaxing by the pool.

Return to Kilimanjaro International Airport

After you have savoured a delicious breakfast overlooking Lake Victoria's waters and said your goodbyes to the team, you will be transferred to the airstrip to board your final regional flight for Kilimanjaro International Airport, via Seronera Airstrip. It’s now homeward bound, taking with you unforgettable and lasting memories of East Africa.
