The Art of Slow Travel – “Slow Travel is a mindset that rejects traditional ideas of tourism and encourages you to soak in your environments and keep yourself open to new experiences.”

A ‘slow travel’ safari is an absolute must. As tourists, we very often whisk from one destination to the next while on safari in Africa, focusing on apex predator sighting and the next big kill. All too often we forget to fully understand and get to know the destination and its local people or wildlife that are more unique and rare.

Slow Travel Activities
Walking Safari

There is really no better way to experience the African bush than on foot.

It is likely that you will get close to larger mammals during your on-foot expedition. This is your chance to explore the ecosystem from the ground up, learning about animal tracks, the beetles and bugs, the variety of plants used for medicinal purposes and the astonishing birdlife, too. If you would like to maximise your walking safari, ask your guide to set up a bush picnic lunch that can be enjoyed while out exploring. The thrill of experiencing the plains on foot is unfathomable – the sounds, views and smells heighten your senses and reveal one of the most profound ways to understand and become one with nature. If you’re interested to see what a walking safari with Asilia is all about, have a look atthis blog post.

Horse Riding

Horse riding offers a unique perspective of the landscape – experience a sense of quiet isolation amidst the vast scenery of the land. For the adventurous, a horseback safari exploring Northern Tanzaniais an experience that will have you reminiscing about the early days of safari. You can explore the uncrowded Tarangire National Park, known for its large herds of elephant and land dotted with baobab trees. If you would like to get off the beaten track, then a Tarangire horseback safari is for you.

Meeting the last two remaining Northern white rhinos is an opportunity of a lifetime, now what if you could combine this experience with a horseback safari adventure? Embark on a horse riding safari in the Ol Pejeta Conservancy, while being based at Ol Pejeta Bush Camp, for thisunique opportunity to ride amongst the critically endangered species. The endangered species enclosure is a predator-free area and amazing to explore. You can also explore the rest of the Ol Pejeta plains and ride to the rhino memorial, Sudan’s resting place.

Boating Safari

A boating safari makes for a memorable way to experience your location. Enjoy a scenic sunset cruise while absorbing the tranquillity of your surroundings. You will have the opportunity to spot a variety of aquatic life and see passing pods of hippo in the shallows and crocodiles sunning themselves on sandbanks. Watch wildlife quench their thirst from the ultimate perspective before the sun sets and another magical day in Africa comes to an end.

Boating safaris are available from Roho ya Selous and Rubondo Island Camp. Roho ya Selous is situated in the heart of the Selous Game Reserve on a small peninsula overlooking the water. Tanzania’s largest river is the great Rufiji/Selous River which meanders through the heart of the Selous. Its many small lakes and tributaries make it an unforgettable riverine environment to explore by boat. Rubondo Island is surrounded by the waters of Lake Victoria and covered in lush, untouched equatorial forest. The waters of Lake Victoria are a crucial breeding ground for tilapia and the Nile perch, offering some of the best fishing in East Africa.

Biking

Hell’s Gate National Park is one of the most atmospheric parks in all of Africa. The park is home to a variety of fauna, flora, and over 100 species of birds. The cliffs, gorges, volcanoes that belch out plumes of geothermal steam, and rock towers make up most of the area’s beautiful scenery. You can even explore Hell’s Gate National Park on a mountain bike?
