The Perfect Catch

Rubondo Islandmay be more well-known for some other unique offerings, but many people may not know that it boasts some of the best freshwater fishing in East Africa!

The island is renowned around the world among anglers who travel to Lake Victoria for the opportunity to hook one of Africa’s biggest and most sought-after freshwater species, the Nile perch, a huge predatory fish whose legendary status immediately gets every angler’s pulse racing. We’ve had fishermen catch Nile perch measuring well over 2 metres and weighing in at over 100kg – impressive! The Nile tilapia is present in the waters too and is an entertaining target for recreational fishermen looking for some fun.

Rubondo is equipped for a variety of fishing techniques – including; trolling, spinning live and dead bait as well as fly-fishing. Anglers from around the world travel to the island for the opportunity to hook a monster. Please do keep in mind that at Rubondo, we practice and supports a strict ‘catch and release policy’.

Catch-and-release fishing from Rubondo Island Camp can be done off the beach and rocks, or by boat. The choice is yours. The camp has two fishing boats, which can be shared or privately hired depending on the experience you’re after.
