LOCATION
Location of Naboisho Camp
Asilia is a founding member of the 20,234-hectare Mara Naboisho Conservancy. Situated in the far north of the Mara-Serengeti ecosystem, this is one of several nonprofit conservancies around the world-famous Masai Mara National Reserve. These conservancies are partnerships between the Maasai and tourism operators such as Asilia. Tourism fees go toward management of each conservancy and the Maasai landowners’ lease payments. Naboisho is one of just eight boutique camps in the Mara Naboisho conservancy, making this safari experience extra special.

Experiences
Close to nature
Naboisho Camp's location within a private conservancy offers guests a variety of ways to get closer to nature and the local culture. Activities such as walking safaris, night game drives, fly camping, and authentic community interactions, which are not possible within the national parks and reserves, are available to guests of the conservancies, offering a truly intimate experience of the wilderness.

Experiences
A typical day on safari at Naboisho Camp
Game drives head out in the early morning and late afternoon when the temperatures are cooler and animals, especially predators, are more active. The exact times differ with the seasons. If you have opted for a private vehicle, you can decide on your schedule, but the below is a good example of what to expect.
Generally, you'll start your day bright and early with a wake-up call and tea or coffee. Enjoy breakfast before you depart for your morning game drive (or have it packed as a picnic to take along). You'll arrive back in camp mid-morning, with a chance to freshen up before lunch.
After a leisurely lunch, enjoy siesta time. Read a book, take a swim or just relax and enjoy the views. Refuel with an afternoon tea before departing for an afternoon/evening game drive with sundowners. You'll be back in time for drinks and dinner – the perfect chance to unwind after a long day in the bush.

Experiences
Game drives
Game drives happen twice per day: in the morning and again in the late afternoon. We can also stay out late to spot nocturnal animals and venture off-road. Our vehicles are seven-seaters with open sides or five-seaters with roofs that open so you can stand for a better view. All vehicles are fitted with power points and fridges, so we can comfortably cruise around the bush all day.

Experiences
Walking safaris
There’s nothing like a walking safari for learning about the Mara ecosystem. A passionate and specially trained Asilia guide will lead a walk through the savannah, pausing to explain bird and animal behaviour, and how all the small things work together, from termites to dung beetles.

Experiences
Night drives
A night safari gives guests the opportunity to spot animals that spend the day snoozing. Our vehicles are equipped with special spotlights that give you the thrilling experience of watching predators as they stalk their prey.

Experiences
Photographic safari
Naboisho is home to one of Asilia’s specially modified photographic vehicles. The open vehicle allows keen amateurs and professional photographers alike to shoot at eye level with wildlife. It is equipped with all the gear to ensure award-winning shots — from beanbags and camera rests to 360° swivel seats. You can read more about the vehicle here. Please enquire to ensure availability of the vehicle and confirm any additional fees.

Experiences
Fly Camping
This is one of the most exciting activities Asilia has to offer and is perfect for those who want an intimate safari experience. Set out on a walking safari in the afternoon and spend a night fly camping in a remote part of the conservancy. We’ll cook dinner over a campfire under the stars and the sounds of the bush will lull you to sleep. We return to the main camp the next morning. Fly-camping is at an additional cost.

Experiences
Children's Safari Programme
Our guides are great with kids. Many of them are parents themselves and love taking children on safari. They can teach them bush skills such as how to track animals, while telling Maasai folktales and stories about life in the Mara. We can plan games or visit a local school to meet future pen pals and learn more about Maasai culture.

Experiences
Cultural and Community Visits
Asilia can organise a trip to a nearby Maasai village, where you can meet our neighbours and learn about Maasai life. We take great care to plan these trips with sensitivity and respect for the local communities.

Experiences
Hot-air balloon rides
You won’t regret the early start when you find yourself sailing over the Mara plains as the sun peeks over the horizon. A hot-air balloon ride offers an incredible vantage point. From above, follow the river and glide over a confusion of wildebeest, journey of giraffes or dazzle of zebras. Balloon rides are at an additional cost and are subject to weather conditions.

Experience
Family safaris
Naboisho is a great destination for families, with two dedicated family tents and a range of special activities for children. Here are some of the fun experiences we can organise for kids:
- Identifying animal tracks
- Learning about local cultures
- Guided nature walks
- Learning bush skills
We warmly welcome any children over the age of five. Please chat to us about your family’s needs and we will make every attempt to accommodate. Private vehicles may be available for families. Please enquire for more information.

When to go
What to expect during the year
Travellers can visit the Mara year round, with plenty to see at any given time. We recommend visiting between January and April as it is a wonderful time to travel with fewer people in the Mara and plenty of wildlife, especially the big cats for which the area is known.
-
January - March
Why travel at this time
The Mara is fairly quiet during these months. There’s plenty of wildlife to spot, including prolific big cats, giraffe, elephant, the occasional black rhino and migratory birds. It’s also when a lot of animals give birth. There are perfect photographic conditions through the first part of the year, with clear skies and flowers that bloom after the short rains of November and December.
Climate
January and February are mostly dry, aside from the odd shower. The long rains don’t start until March. Though it’s the hottest time of year, the Mara is rarely sweltering with average highs of 28°C/82°F in February. The average low is 13°C/55°F from January to March.
-
Low Temp: 13°C / 55°F
-
High Temp: 27°C / 81°F
-
Rainfall: 83mm / 3.3in
-
-
April - June
Why travel at this time
This is the best time to avoid crowds, assuming you don’t mind a bit of rain and the possibility of some roads being closed (usually in May). It’s also the least expensive time to visit the Mara.
Climate
April and May are when the long rains fall, but it’s fairly dry by June. In April, the average high is 26°C/79°F, dropping slightly to 25°C/77°F in May and June. The average low is around 13°C/55°F.
-
Low Temp: 13°C / 55°F
-
High Temp: 25°C / 77°F
-
Rainfall: 109mm / 4.3in
-
-
July - September
Why travel at this time
Peak season in the Mara. It’s dry and the Great Migration wildebeest herds have started arriving – these months are the best opportunity to see the wildebeest cross the Mara River.
Climate
July is the driest month of the year and relatively cool, with an average high of 25°C/77°F and a low of 11°C/52°F. August and September might see some showers and there’s a maximum average of 26°C / 79°F and a minimum of 12°C / 54°F.
-
Low Temp: 12°C / 54°F
-
High Temp: 25°C / 77°F
-
Rainfall: 42mm / 1.7in
-
-
October - December
Why travel at this time
The last of the wildebeest herds usually travel back to the Serengeti throughout October, so it’s still possible to see river crossings. Migratory birds start to arrive in the area. The short rains provide the land with some much-needed hydration after the dry season.
Climate
The short rains fall in November and December with temperatures rising to an average of 27°C/81°F in October and November and lows an average of 12°C/54°F.
-
Low Temp: 13°C / 55°F
-
High Temp: 27°C / 81°F
-
Rainfall: 99mm / 3.9in

Guest reviews
The Naboisho Camp is a lovely area to spend some days on drives to see the beautiful animals, go on a bush walk with a professional bushman (we had Roelf who was great and very informative), throw seed balls out of the vehicle to plant trees, take a bucket shower, make purchases at the shop which sells the bead products made by the Maasai women from the area, enjoy the camp facilities and the delicious meals. Something fun for everyone.

We loved everything - the setting, the feeling of being properly 'on safari', the staff, the food, the room, the ambience... On our last night we had a private dinner in the new pool house, which made for the perfect end to a perfect visit. We really didn't want to return to the hustle bustle of Nairobi! And of course - the animals - large and small (do not miss the chance to walk out with one of the Lodge's managers who has a prolific knowledge of the African bush). -

I would like to congratulate Naboisho on the fantastic new pool and lounge area. It blends in perfectly with the surroundings and the fact that you can actually have your fireside drink and your dinner there is great. Makes it possible to have a private dinner. I would say that the addition of the pool makes Naboisho the preferred lodge on Mara - as everything else in the camp has similar high standards. Would highly recommend Naboisho and would love to come back soon again.

ITINERARY
Explore the Naboisho Conservancy on Foot
The Naboisho Conservancy of the Greater Masai Mara is perfect walking safari territory and our Kenya head guide, Roelof, loves nothing more than taking guests to explore this wild place on foot.
This trip is an ideal compromise for those wanting more than just one night of fly camping but without either the time or fitness levels for our longer cross-Mara expedition (“Traverse the Mara Conservancies on foot”). Roelof is hugely experienced at leading walking safaris and has guided film- and documentary-makers across Kenya and sub-Saharan Africa, and is a passionate conservationist and wildlife photographer.
You will be walking in a big game area so should be prepared to encounter anything, including lion or buffalo, and must always follow the instructions of Roelof to ensure your safety.
Exploring on foot offers a unique perspective and is reminiscent of the early days of safari, where exploration was largely on foot or horseback. This slower, quieter approach allows you to get closer to more skittish wildlife, listen to birdcalls and track animals from their signs in the bush. For experienced safari-goers, this is the ultimate way to experience a safari and connect with the landscape you are exploring.
Frequently Asked Questions
-
What are the benefits of visiting a private conservancy like Naboisho?
Because the Mara Naboisho Conservancy is private, it is not governed by the same rules and regulations as national parks and reserves.
At Naboisho, guests can go on walking safaris to study the savannah up close, drive off-road in search of a lioness and her cubs, take night drives to spot wildlife that only appears after dark, picnic in the wilderness and even organise fly camping trips.
