Trip Overview

From Ngorongoro to the Serengeti on Foot
Step outside your safari vehicle on this walking expedition from the Ngorongoro Highlands right into the heart of the eastern Serengeti. Walking in the footsteps of Maasai cattle herders, you will be amongst the first travellers to make this journey, far away from graded roads and into the wilds of Maasai land and parts of the Serengeti seldom seen by visitors. Beginning in the Ngorongoro Highlands, you will walk around the northern rim of the iconic Ngorongoro Crater, dropping down into the vast Salei Plains. Walk from here past the Gol Mountains, Pride Rock and the majestic Barafu Kopjes, one of our favourite spots in the eastern Serengeti. Reaching your destination at Namiri Plains, this is prime cheetah country with never-ending savannah stretching across the rugged, wind-whipped plains. This area was closed off to tourism for 20 years while Frankfurt Zoological Society undertook extensive studies on the cheetah and other big cats around Namiri Plains, and is still truly an unspoilt wilderness today. You can learn more about the history of this destination (as well as look out for the spotted felines) when you get to Namiri Plains at the end of your adventure.
Itinerary Details

Arrive at The Highlands today (or earlier if you wish to visit the Ngorongoro Crater or enjoy other activities in the region), located on the side of the Olmoti Crater in the Ngorongoro Highlands. Enjoy an afternoon relaxing and enjoying views over the rolling Maasai land, and perhaps visit one of the local Maasai villages nearby. These visits are authentic and un-rehearsed, instead offering a genuine insight into the daily goings on of the community. Guests often join in with what’s happening when they arrive, whether that’s milking cattle or herding up the goats in the late evening, accompanied by your guide. Your Wayo walking safari guide will meet you this evening to discuss the next days of walking and you’ll enjoy a delicious dinner and a good night’s sleep in your geodesic dome tent before your adventure begins tomorrow.

What Is Included In This Adventure?
All meals from lunch on Day 1 to breakfast on Day 9, all house drinks (soft drinks and selected alcohol) throughout, transfer from Manyara Airstrip to The Highlands at the start, and from Namiri Plains to Seronera Airstrip at the end of the adventure, park and camping fees, expert walking guide (with rifle) throughout, back-up four-wheel safari vehicle, all logistics for fly camp set up, Asilia conservation charge and Medevac cover.
Fly Camp Facilities
Lightweight nylon mountain tents with mattresses on the floor, pillows, bed linens or good quality sleeping bags if cold. Outdoor long-drop toilet a few metres from sleeping tent. Dining is mostly outdoors when the weather permits, but there is a mess tent when shelter or shade is needed. Bucket showers are also available to freshen up. For the first night where the fly camp is carried in by donkeys rather than by vehicle, the set up will be very simple, but still comfortable. Due to the altitude around the Ngorongoro region, the nights can be cold so we recommend packing some warm clothes, thick socks and a woolly hat.
